What was your first job as a journalist?
Wrote for a small local publication for free then paid a little. Loved it and never looked back.
How is social media changing news?
It's democratizing media and allowing for a greater diversity of voices. But the format is poor for issues that require more depth.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
The opportunity and responsibility to be a magnifying glass into a unique aspect of our world
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
I prefer an in-depth thoughtful pitch that aligns well with my previous pieces.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Too many to count. At it's basics a laptop, camera, and Google docs is all I need to write. The promotion is where it gets complicated.
What's your favorite social network?
I think Facebook is still great because you can generate conversation but link to longer form resources which are important to being informed
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
I wrote a series of feature pieces about the city of Flint's unique places and businesses building a resurgence there for the community
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Find ways to work on your craft every day, paid or unpaid. There are a million stories unfolding around you, start telling them.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Usually in the morning is a good time. Though I work on longer form pieces quite often so quality is more important than the timing.
What's your favorite drink?
Love variety but if I picked just one would have to be ginger Kombucha. Delicious and oh so healthy.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
I really enjoy the Athletic for my favorite sports teams. Smart thoughtful in-depth pieces every time
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
That it's just fluff. The more you can get locals and travelers experiencing an area the more people will invest their resources long-term.
