What was your first job as a journalist?
Freelance writer. If you don't count high school paper, but we weren't paid. Some real child labor crap.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes, but it was an electric one my grandmother gave me. I loved it for that reason, but hated it because you don't plug in a real typewriter.
How is social media changing news?
Social media is democratizing news, with the all the benefits and dangerous issues that come with it.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Rosalind Russell as Hildy Johnson in His Girl Friday and Rebecca Hall's performance of Christine Chubbuck in Christine.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
By email.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Laptop, Emaki, Asana, Slack, coffee, brain, fingers, eyes, the loving warmth of a sleeping dog next to me.
What's your favorite social network?
My favorite social network is the movie, The Social Network. It's maybe the only one that doesn't sow discord and ruin what kindness is left.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I did, and by the end, I believe my job was to just annoy everyone and write reviews that had to be edited down to a tenth of their size.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
The story of my life. Nah, probably my retrospective and appreciation of Jean-Luc Godard. Rest in power.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Anytime, and I'll respond when it's the best time for me to respond to a pitch. Always in flux.
What's your favorite drink?
Coffee, lattes, cappuccinos, espressos, whiskey, very cold water, and pretentious craft beers. And coffee.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
In bed! Or in front of the TV.
