UMass Baseball drops midweek battle against Quinnipiac
HAMDEN, Conn. — The Massachusetts baseball team couldn’t hold onto a lead late and fell 10-7 to Quinnipiac on Wednesday. The offense and pitching for UMass (10-27, 3-12 Atlantic 10) struggled at multiple points throughout the contest. With one out in the top of the fifth, Sam Hill walked to put a runner on for Michael Toth. Toth sent a long fly ball deep over the wall in left field for a two-run home run. “I was just looking for my pitch really,” Toth said.

Gigabit broadband connections must be installed in all new-build homes in England. The Building Regulations 2010 has been amended to make sure all new homes built in England are fitted with the infrastructure capable of delivering gigabit broadband speeds. Sky Stream is now available
Powered by WiFi, not satellite. Sky’s plug and play product, Sky Stream, has officially released today. With Sky Stream, you can order and install yourself, with it being able to work on any television. It works as it would an Amazon Fire Stick or other smart stick, plugging into the mains and then into a TV with a HDMI cable. Just turn it on and connect to your home WiFi network.
Hyperoptic is offering new customers 9 months free broadband
Wednesday 7 September 2022 Hyperoptic could save consumers over £160, it says. Hyperoptic are tempting customers away from their current internet service provider (ISP) by offering them 9 months of free internet access. While many would have to pay exit fees to leave their current provider, not having to pay for broadband for 9 months would certainly more than offset the cost.
Rural primary schools set for broadband upgrade

The £82 million investment will go towards helping around half a million primary school children across England. The scheme will also benefit surrounding rural homes and business, too.

Climate leaders of the Global South: the scientists, politicians and activists tackling the crisis at home
The Global South has contributed very little to the world climate crisis but is already exposed to some of its most catastrophic effects.
The Adventure That Eats U.S. Thru-Hikers for Breakfast
(Matt Maynard) In late 2017, I contacted explorer and German engineer Jan Dudeck, who was just completing a decade-long quest to create a new long trail through South America. The Greater Patagonian Trail (GPT), as he named it, would come to be 1,900 miles, stretching through the southern Andes from Santiago to the Argentinean climbing mecca of Mount Fitzroy. “This trail rewards the humble,” Dudeck replied in his e-mail to me, “and humiliates the proud.” That came as no surprise.
The purpose of adventure in the 21st century
Going out into the world’s wildernesses or performing extraordinary feats of endurance have long been opportunities to inspire and educate. Matt Maynard asks what standard we should hold modern-day explorers to in the wake of the climate and environmental crises In 1968, William Anders took what has been described as the greatest environmental photograph of all time while venturing farther than any other human had travelled before aboard the Apollo 8 spacecraft.

Spotlight on... St Kilda – those who leave and those who stay - Geographical Magazine
Ninety years after depopulation, the Scottish islands of St Kilda continue to exert a huge pull for visitors – and are a barometer of the threats faced by the UK’s seabirds Thirty-six men, women and children were on board HMS Harebell as it manoeuvred out of the crescent-shaped harbour of Village Bay on the island of Hirta on the 29 August 1930. The ship was bound for Lochaline in Argyll and the passengers, the last residents of St Kilda, were leaving for good.
Profile: George Meegan – the man who completed the longest walk in the world - Geographical Magazine
In 1977, British adventurer George Meegan set out to attempt the world’s longest unbroken journey by foot, walking from Ushuaia at the southern tip of Argentina to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. The world would wait until 2018, some 35 years later, to see his journey repeated George Meegan stands on the rear porch of his home in Rainham, Kent, telling a humorous story. He overlooks a modest-sized garden, and a large tree planted after his parents were relocated here from local tenement housing in 1962.

COP26 delay: opportunity or disaster?
Now that the 2020 UN Climate Change Summit has been postponed, a huge question arises: how bad will it be for the environment? COP26, as the meeting is colloquially called, was originally scheduled to be held in Glasgow in November but it is now clear that the ongoing pandemic would have jeopardised – eight months from now – the attendance of representatives from all of the 194 countries required to vote unanimously.
Coronavirus: the real impact on the climate
Covid-19 has forced us to reduce destructive atmospheric behaviours and has reminded us that we are at the mercy of nature. Matt Maynard looks into the effect that viral-mitigation is having on global emissions, and asks whether current material and emotional responses to coronavirus could help limit the climate pandemic in the future How should our global population react to a planetary emergency?
No oil, no coal, no future? Are we prepared for a ‘just transition’?
It is supposed to ease the transfer of workers in high-carbon industries and environment-destroying jobs into cleaner, greener alternatives, without destroying their livelihoods in the process. But if the so-called ‘Just Transition’ holds all the answers, why aren’t governments around the world listening? I think we have to start with the idea that there has never been any such thing as a just transition in the US,’ says Phil Smith, director of communications at the United Mine Workers of America.
Most people think they are more environmentally friendly than others – they’re wrong - Geographical Magazine
Most people think they are more environmentally friendly than others. Most people are wrong... Humans are a remarkably optimistic and confident bunch. In psychological circles this is not just conjecture but a proven phenomenon known as the ‘better than average effect’ (BTAE). Academic research has demonstrated that people consistently think they are better than the average person when it comes to driving, teaching, athletic ability, leadership skills and social skills.
UN Climate Talks 2019: COP25 Madrid, Spain
By Sophie Yeo • Monday, December 23, 2019 - 08:00 The year is almost over, and — in so many ways — we are in a different place now than when the year began. For many people, it feels like something has shifted when it comes to climate action. This has been a year of unprecedented activism, from Greta Thunberg to Extinction Rebellion, and the UK set a goal to reduce emissions to net-zero by 2050. By Richard Collett...
Climatewatch - Why 2020 marks the start of a crucial decade for the environment
As a new decade begins, Marco Magrini wonders if the 2020s could be make or break for when it comes to fixing the environment Welcome to the 2020s, a crucial time in history. To put it bluntly, during this decade humankind will either decide to steer clear of the climatic maelstrom, or to plunge into it. For some time, climate scientists have been describing 2020 as a key turning point.

Pickles, packet noodles and plenty of leeches
Matthew Jones and Rosalie Wright were delighted when they unearthed details of an expedition to a remote corner of Borneo’s rainforest in the 1950s.
A global ‘toilet revolution’ is underway – but it’s polluting water and ignoring the urban poor - Geographical Magazine
Nearly seven hundred million people around the world lack access to proper toilets. While efforts are underway to change this, not all schemes are equal Don’t take toilets for granted. Their connection to a managed sewage disposal system protects you from diseases and infections that can stunt your growth, harm your nutrition and even kill you.
COP25: Europe’s Green Deal opens door to global climate disaster politics
As polluting rich nations court global catastrophe at UN climate talks, Europe’s 2050 carbon neutrality target embraces 3˚C of warming as best-case scenario Hope is the last to die, and the Paris Agreement created plenty of it. For the last four years, since COP21 in France, world nations have consoled themselves that the gulf between their intentions and the globally agreed target to limit warming to well below 2˚C was a temporary accounting challenge.
COP25: Madrid-hosted climate conference ends with a whimper
So, in the end, the 2019 UN Climate Change Conference accomplished nothing. The delegates from 194 countries who gathered for two weeks in Madrid, didn’t manage to raise their emission-cut ambitions, didn’t succeed in establishing an international carbon market and didn’t figure out how to fund poorer countries’ climatic effort.
COP25: Citizens and scientists unite behind steel curtain of climate injustice
Protestors from the global south were physically removed yesterday from the Madrid climate conference. However, a civil society armed with climate science refuses to be left out in the cold Brandon Wu is director of campaigns and policy at Action Aid USA and he has just been reunited with his jacket. He’s spent a few chilly hours outside the COP25 United Nations climate summit in Madrid after being ejected from the venue.
COP25: ‘Fossil’ awards highlight ‘good and evil’ players in Madrid
‘Mankind is not likely to salvage civilisation unless he can evolve a system of good and evil which is independent of heaven and hell,’ reads a famous George Orwell quote.
COP25: Climate Summit kicks off in Madrid with statements of warning
For the 25th time in history, the United Nations has convened for its annual two-week summit, trying to collectively solve the climate crisis. But is the will there to make real change? The 2019 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, or COP25, kicked off on Monday in Madrid, thanks to the magic trick performed by the Spanish government which managed to organise it in 18 days (instead of the usual 18 months) after Chile had thrown in the towel because of social unrest at home.
Climatewatch - Chile cancels COP25
Marco Magrini wonders if the annual gathering of world leadership on environmental matters can make any real impact following its rushed relocation We are the first generation to suffer from the effects of climate change and the last one that can do something about it.’ This bold (and sadly true) statement came from Chilean president Sebastián Piñera, when he was about to host the 2019 United Nations Climate Change Conference, better known as COP25. Unfortunately, he is a host no more.
COP25: Growing tourism to severely impact environmental health
A report presented at COP25 highlights the trouble with tourism, but does the future of holiday travel cast an even darker shadow? Under the Paris Agreement, nations, corporations and entire industrial sectors are expected to reduce their greenhouse-gas emissions. But tourism will not comply, or at least not for now.
Conscious uncoupling: The link between China’s growth and increased pollution has come to an end
The link between China’s economic growth and increased pollution has come to an end, but the path to sustainability is far from complete In 1978, with Mao Zedong’s Cultural Revolution finally over, China began to open up to the rest of the world. Since then, the country has experienced phenomenal economic growth. In the 40 years up to 2018, China’s GDP expanded by an annual average of 9.6 per cent, an overall thirty-fold increase, making China the world’s second largest economy behind the US.
Conflict and compassion: How Chile’s ‘social crisis’ could reframe the pivotal UN climate summit in Santiago
Protestors claim the nation’s neo-liberal system is broken. Amid bullets and tear gas, socio-economic reforms are being rushed through. With the COP25 climate conference fast approaching, could this spotlight on equity help deepen commitments to the Paris Climate Agreement? Protestors are handing out quartered lemons to grateful strangers in Santiago’s Plaza Italia. The busy junction is the Chilean equivalent of Piccadilly Circus, used for celebration and protest.
Revealed: Anglo American Mine Expansion Could Put Chile's Glaciers and Emissions Goals At Risk
The emissions from a new Anglo American underground mine project in Chile could be catastrophic for the host nation of the next UN climate talks, DeSmog can reveal. The multinational company has so far avoided scrutiny of the project by hollowing out regional environmental organisations and sharing erroneous information with the scientific community.

Within decades, economic growth must cease – Chris Cunningham - Geographical Magazine
Chris Cunningham, author of Climate Change and the Cargo Cult, argues that economic growth as we currently define it, is disastrous for the climate During the Second World War, in several South Pacific Islands, and notably on what is now Vanuatu, local people saw the US and Allied military forces landing earth-moving equipment and quickly building makeshift airstrips. They noticed that very shortly afterwards, big aircraft landed and unloaded a cornucopia of cargo for the Allied troops.
Climate science: an intricate web of unknown outcomes
As the Amazon burns, Marco Magrini feels that it’s time to start looking at the fundamental interconnectedness of all things Feedbacks are key elements in climate science. They can be ‘negative’, such as the so-called blackbody radiation effect: the warmer the Earth, the more infrared radiation is sent back into space.
Global Climate Strike: Voices of the protestors
Yesterday saw one of the biggest public protest movements in history take to streets around the world. We caught up with some of the voices being raised in central London to hear what they had to say... Maddie, 18 (right, above) I’m bats**t terrified about what’s going to happen if we don’t change anything, and the panic of just wanting to change things for my kids and for myself. I have to do something about it because I can't just sit at home watching it happen.
The #GlobalClimateStrike comes to London - The day in pictures
We took to the streets of Westminster to take a look at London's part in the Global Climate Strike which saw millions across the world march for climate justice today Thousands of people in the UK joined the Global Climate Strike today, taking to the streets of cities including London, Edinburgh, Manchester, Glasgow, Cardiff, Brighton, Newcastle, Bournemouth and Birmingham to call for ‘climate justice’.
Thunberg and Juliana plaintiffs strike back against US climate denial machine
On the eve of millions of world citizens going on strike for climate action, the Swedish teenager who inspired them deflects all attention back to the science Greta Thunberg and youth plaintiffs from the Juliana vs United States trial have been in Washington DC this week, pressing home the urgency of climate action ahead of a worldwide week of climate strikes. 5,225 climate strike events have been organised between 20-27 September in 156 countries on all seven continents.
Expeditions Unpacked: Discover what the great explorers took into the unknown
In this unique and enthralling new book, explorer and survivalist Ed Stafford curates 25 great expeditions through the lens of the kit these remarkable explorers took with them. In an environment where lack of preparation could mean certain death, the equipment carried, ridden and sailed into uncharted territories could mean the success or failure of an expedition. Was it simply a case of better provisions and preparation that helped Amundsen beat Scott to the South Pole?
The fight for environmental justice in America’s segregated cities
‘Abolitionist climate justice’ is an evolving movement that aims to tackle the disparate effects of climate change across race and class In 1987, a report released by the United Church of Christ Commission for Racial Justice laid bare the stark reality of exposure to toxic waste experienced by African-American communities in the United States.
