Dear Readers, It has been a long time since you've heard from me – properly, at least. For some of you, it may be the first time that Inkcap has appeared in your inbox at all. Let me re-introduce myself. I am Sophie Yeo. I founded Inkcap Journal in 2020. It was borne of my belief that nature in Britain deserved robust and in-depth journalism. For a couple of years, Inkcap was my baby. I worked long hours, publishing in-depth features, alongside a weekly digest of nature news.

The first is Feral, by George Monbiot, which thrust the concept into the limelight and was at least partly responsible for igniting the backlash in Wales that has lasted to the present day. The second is Rebirding, by Benedict Macdonald, which put the ecological flesh on the bones of Monbiot’s campaign. And the third is Tir: The Story of the Welsh Landscape, by Carwyn Graves.

It has involved more than three years of research and writing, which I have largely carried out in secret. But the secret is finally out! Nature's Ghosts: The World we Lost and How to Bring it Backis coming out on 23 May 2024. It is being published by HarperNorth and was announced in the Bookseller today. Given how entwined it has been with my work here, I hope you will allow me to tell you a little more about it. Firstly, the cover: isn't it striking?
