The "official" start of the Atlantic hurricane season is June 1, though there is nothing meteorologically significant about that particular date. The six-month season from June through November was selected by the National Hurricane Center to encompass 97 percent of all Atlantic named storms. In 2014, Hurricane Arthur, the strongest U.S. hurricane landfall since Ike in 2008, was the season's first named storm.
