I already told you how much I loved writing for the Rockford Register Star the last 35 years. And how the coach of the first game I ever covered in Rockford, Winnebago boys basketball coach Joe Murphy, is still coaching 'Bago. Well, here are a few examples of why in my final story before retiring from the Register Star. Maybe the best compliment I received in recent days came from Mary Kaull, the exceptional former editorial writer at the Register Star. She said I zigged when others zagged.

Brett Myhres started as Guilford PA voice age 14. Still going at 43

Brett Myhres's freshman world history teacher Ben Canter also coached wrestling for Guilford. “I casually mentioned in class one day that I was interested in announcing," Myhres recalled. That’s all Canter needed to hear. He needed a public address announcer for Guilford's wrestling match that week. Myhres was hired. Not much later, the 14-year-old Myhres was also announcing Guilford soccer games. And boys and girls basketball games. Volleyball games. Football games. Softball. Track. Cheerleading.

QB Braxton Fausett, fast receivers make Harlem a NIC-10 title threat

Harlem is scoring too fast. “We’re a pretty dynamic bunch,” Harlem coach Jim Morrow said after the Huskies beat Auburn 28-6 on four touchdowns that averaged 56 yards on Saturday, Sept. 6. “Now, we have to get that dynamic bunch to play consistently.” Morrow wasn’t thrilled that Harlem (2-0) had a total of only three first downs on its first four drives against Auburn (0-2). “My mentality is, let’s put together those 12-play or 18-play drives,” he said. Still, he knows that is nitpicking.
