Conclusions A large, heterogeneous literature investigates the impact of economic sanctions on health and health systems in LMICs. Few studies quantify those impacts addressing challenges to causal inference. Looking at the proportion of studies consistently reporting harmful effects, the evidence strongly suggests the existence of adverse consequences. The finding is in line with previous reviews, but stems from a more comprehensive search strategy and state-of-the-art evidence synthesis methods.
