replying to M. Hultström et al. Nature Immunology https://doi.org/10.1038/s41590-022-01227-w (2022) Prompted by our report on the role of mannose-binding lectin (MBL) in resistance to COVID-19 (ref. 1), Hultström and colleagues2 conducted a genetic and biochemical analysis of this fluid-phase pattern recognition molecule in 426 patients of the SweCovid Swedish initiative and in data extracted from summary statistics of the COVID-19 Host Genetics Initiative (HGI)3.
1.1. RPE and BRB’s Anatomy and Physiology The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is a single cell layer composed of hexagonal polarized cells with microvilli that extend from the apical surface to envelop the outer segments of rods and cones of the photoreceptor (PR) layer of the retina. The RPE plays a central role in vision because of both physical and metabolic reasons [ 1 , 2 ].
The aggregation of amyloid β protein (Aβ) is a fundamental pathogenic mechanism leading to the neuronal damage present in Alzheimer disease, and soluble Aβ oligomers are thought to be a major toxic culprit. Thus, better knowledge and specific targeting of the pathways that lead to these noxious species may result in valuable therapeutic strategies. We characterized some effects of the molecular chaperone clusterin, providing new and more detailed evidence of its potential neuroprotective effects.
