Making Something Beautiful of a Roadside
Ken Wilson. Walking the Bypass: Notes on Place from the Side of the Road. University of Regina Press, 2025, pp. xiii-337. ISBN: 9781779400765 $27.95 softcover. Years ago, maybe while reading Emma Marris’s 2011 book Rambunctious Garden, I first came across the idea that nature doesn’t have to be a placid lake or a seemingly untouched forest.
The School Year Is Almost Over — Is Your Child Still Struggling with Reading?
When children struggle with reading and learning despite all the best efforts to help, the end of the school year, is often a time for reflection. Did we miss anything? Is there anything else we can do to help our child succeed? What if the problem is something that everyone assumed was fine and perhaps a doctor even told you it was fine? Many children who struggle in school are bright, motivated kids who don’t seem to be living up to their potential.
Attention Parents: An Important Word About Toys this Winter
There are different ways to think about the time children spend playing with their toys. It could be thought of as a way to keep the kids busy so parents can work or get things done around the house (which is extremely valuable). It can also be viewed as time when children are learning and developing a variety of different skills that will serve them well throughout their lives.
"Lived experience of student responders with leadership in a mass casua" by Matthew Anderson, Calvin Reed ` et al.
Mass casualty situations create leadership opportunities for nurses and emergency responders, yet there is a notable gap in current literature regarding the benefits of interdisciplinary training on student leadership development. The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experience of leadership emergence within undergraduate nursing and emergency medical technician students in the context of a mass casualty incidentsimulation.
Helping Struggling Readers Over the Summer
Did you know that many kids who struggle with reading might actually have trouble seeing clearly? Vision problems are more common than you might think, and they can make it really hard for children to do well in school. Many parents assume their child’s vision is fine because the child can see things like toys across the room or watch TV without problems. Their child may also have passed a vision screening or eye exam because they could see the letters on the eye chart.
A Phenomenological Study of Nursing Student Ro" by Adrianna Watson PhD, RN, CCRN, TCRN, Matthew Anderson DNP, APRN, FNP-C et al.
To explore the experiences of undergraduate nursing students in navigating daily micro-transitions between nursing and non-nursing roles. Nursing students develop professional role identity through socialization, experience, and practice while simultaneously managing pre-existing personal roles. This dynamic creates a training ground for future sustainable practice. Qualitative, cross-sectional, interpretive phenomenological design with hermeneutics.
An Important Word About Toys
If you are like most parents, you are looking for toys that are not only fun but are either educational or help with overall development. Fortunately, there are many toys to choose from. Many parents don’t realize that we are not born with perfect vision. In fact, children’s vision continues to develop all the way through the teen years. While our eyes stop growing at 25 years of age, kids should have developed all the visual skills required for reading and learning by the time they turn 16.

Non-Linear Ray Tracing Visualizing the Impossible
Keywords ray tracing, photo-realistic simulation, light rays College Physical and Mathematical Sciences Abstract Ray tracing is a common technique for computational, photo-realistic simulation of the “real world.” However, most current approaches assume light propagation is linear: that is, light always travels in a straight line. Our aim was to create a ray tracing program that would handle the “bending” of light waves at relativistic speeds or by gravitational forces.
Thinking About Vision for the Summer
With summer activities gearing up, we thought you might like some information to share with your friends and family about how vision problems can impact summer activities. Here are ideas on different signs to let you know if a child may have an eye coordination or eye movement problem that could be impacting sports and/or academic performance. As your children have been busy enjoying summer activities, have you noticed that they have trouble doing different things?
Assessing Medical Adherence in a Volunteer Community Health Clinic
Purpose: The purpose of this project was to identify the rates of and reasons for nonadherence in medical follow-up care among patients who utilize the Volunteer Care Clinic (VCC). Background: The VCC is a free outpatient care center for acute medical conditions. The VCC serves uninsured, low socioeconomic residents of Utah County, and many of the patients who come to the clinic primarily speak Spanish.
Summer is a Great Time to See to Your Child’s Vision
When you have a bright child who doesn’t achieve to potential, we often affectionately call them underachievers, because we know they are capable of achieving so much more. As a parent, it can present quite a challenge to figure out how to “inspire” your bright child to get the work done while still helping your other children and getting all the chores done at home.
"Understanding Factors Influencing Nursing Faculty Departure and Intent" by Matthew Anderson, Noelle Taylor et al.
There is a known shortage of nursing faculty in academia. Understanding factors influencing the shortage will help to develop strategies to reduce it. The purpose was to identify the underlying factors influencing the decisions of current and former nursing faculty to leave or consider leaving their teaching roles. A cross-sectional state-level survey was distributed to licensed registered nurses and advanced practice registered nurses.
Solving Reading Difficulties
Working with children on their schoolwork provides the opportunity for parents to see firsthand what happens when their children are trying to learn. It is easy to mistakenly assume that when a child struggles with reading comprehension, it couldn’t possibly be due to a vision problem. This is typically because the child can actually read the text out loud. It may not be read perfectly, but it seems as though there is “no problem” seeing the actual letters on the page.
Attention Parents: An Important Word About Toys
It is time to find presents for our kids for the holidays. Most parents try to find toys that are not only fun, but are either educational or help with overall development. Fortunately, many toys play a vital role in not only overall development, but also visual development. When children play too many computer games and watch too much TV or movies, they don’t get the necessary opportunities to develop the visual skills that are critical to academic success.
Vision Problems Can Look Like Learning Difficulties
When children continue to struggle with reading and learning despite all best efforts to help them, it can be very difficult to figure out the source of the problem. When a vision problem is at the root of a child’s struggles with learning, it is often very hidden.
