My Dead Book - Nate Lippens
[Publication Studio; 2021] “Why do we live here?” asks the narrator of My Dead Book before he clarifies. “I mean all of us and I mean anywhere.” Nate Lippens’s short, poetic novel, which is structured as a series of non-linear scenes from the life of a former gay hustler on the verge of turning fifty, is filled with quips and epigrams perfectly suited to the bleak hilarity and existential dread of 2022 and beyond.
God Among the Letters: An Essay in Abecedarian
"When they ask what [God's] name is, what shall I tell them?" -Exodus 3:13 "Language is only the instrument of science, and words are but the signs of ideas." -Dr. Johnson, A Dictionary of the English Language (1755) 1. Attar of Nishapur, the 12th-century Persian Sufi, wrote of a pilgrimage of birds. His masterpiece The Conference of the Birds recounts how 30 fowls were led by a tufted, orange hoopoe (wisest of his kind) to find the Simurgh, a type of bird-god or king.
This is the best band from the ’90s you’ve never heard
I first heard Bedhead in 1994, when one of my roommates bought "WhatFunLifeWas" after reading a review in Melody Maker. I was in my mid-20s, living in a city where I had moved with the expectation that it would be more urbane and artistic than the suburbs of my youth.
‘#gods’ by Matthew Gallaway
Matthew Gallaway’s new novel, #gods (Fiction Advocate), opens on a grisly scene that wouldn’t be out of place in an episode of True Detective or Law & Order—a victim of a ritual killing, body burned black and surrounded by flowers and votive candles, is discovered in an abandoned building.
Go Independent Or Go Home – The Awl
Today, my second novel is being published by an independent press based in San Francisco. It’s technically a “soft launch,” meaning the publisher?—?Fiction Advocate?—?will start shipping copies to anyone who orders direct, with the official/Amazon pub date pushed back a month, to August 22.
Literary Beatdowns: or, Excerpts from Smollett's 'Critical Review'
Nasty book reviews compel our attention, summoning the cruel voyeur in everyone that derives pleasure from the pain of others. I mean a merciless excoriation, equal parts tragedy and comedy, a review that out-writes the writing in question and betrays the very real fun to be had at the expense of bad literature. Alas, such beatdowns are hard to find these days.
