The point of working1 is to produce enough value for the rest of society to be able to consume as many goods and services as we want for at least as long as we are alive.2 “Progress” is when people can buy more/better goods and services for a given amount of work. Some might choose to work less than others if they have fewer material desires3, but even those who work extremely hard may have trouble earning enough to cover their expenses if nobody else values their output highly enough.

Most investors are still positioned for the old environment

Most portfolios are built for a specific environment. As long as that environment holds, they should behave the way people expect. For much of the past decade, investing operated within a remarkably supportive environment. Interest rates stayed low, liquidity was abundant, and risk-taking was consistently rewarded. Investors learned that market weakness was temporary, policy support would eventually appear, and buying the dip generally worked. That environment shaped behavior as much as portfolios.

Russia's Underwhelming Oil Revenue Windfall

A barrel of Brent crude oil cost about $103, on average, in the month of March, up from $66/barrel in October 2025-February 2026. Thanks to sanctions, the price of Russian Urals crude was somewhat lower in the months before the war with Iran, averaging around $55/barrel, while the price increase was proportionately larger as some of those sanctions were lifted in an attempt to mitigate the disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.
