Abstract Patients with femur fractures who are concurrently infected with COVID-19 face a threefold increase in mortality, likely due to a compounded inflammatory response. Furthermore, sex-specific differences in immune responses to COVID-19 have been documented, implicating gender as a potential modulator of disease severity in these comorbid conditions.

Abstract Inflammation serves as a critical defense mechanism against pathogens and tissue damage but can lead to chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes, when dysregulated. Macrophages play a pivotal role in orchestrating inflammatory responses, transitioning from pro-inflammatory M1 to anti-inflammatory M2 phenotypes to resolve inflammation and promote tissue repair.
