Official: Olwethu Makhanya transferred to Rangers FC

Center back Olwethu Makhanya won’t be returning to Chester after his time with South Africa at the FIFA World Cup. Both the Philadelphia Union and Rangers FC made the transfer of the 22-year-old official on Thursday. Makhanya’s move is reportedly in the $4.5 million range, which ranks in the top 3 of all-time outgoing transfers for the team. The Union reportedly paid in the $800,000 range to acquire the South Africa international from Stellenbosch FC in 2023.

Sunderland defeat Wrexham in preseason friendly

Sunderland came out on top of their final preseason friendly match at Subaru Park on Sunday, defeating Wrexham by a 1-0 scoreline. Nordi Mukiele scored the lone goal in the match, assisted by Netherlands striker Brian Brobbey. Wrexham and Sunderland’s preseason tours in the USA ended with Sunday’s face-off in Chester. Both clubs faced Leeds and Liverpool in the states before the finale between the two British sides.

Best XI left back Kai Wagner re-signs with the Philadelphia Union

Kai Wagner is back! The Philadelphia Union announced the return of the Best XI left back to the squad on Friday, acquiring the team’s all-time assist leader from Birmingham City for about $1.5 million more than they sold him for seven months ago. Wagner was signed to a designated player spot on the roster and inked a deal guaranteed through the 2028-2029 season with an option for 2029-2030.
