1 INTRODUCTION Participation in ultra-endurance events – defined as either exercising for more than 6 h or running more than 42.2 km – has increased in recent years (Scheer, 2019; Zaryski & Smith, 2005). These events test the limits of human performance and offer insight into physiology and metabolism. Nutrition plays a key role in supporting energy balance and optimizing performance before, during, and after such efforts (Thomas et al., 2016).

The Passive Isn’t Wordy or Evasive, You Are! The passive voice in English gets a lot of undue bad press; it is frequently alleged to be ‘wordy,’ ‘evasive,’ or ‘weak.’ Before examining why these attacks are unjustified, let us first consider what the passive voice is and how to identify it when we encounter it. The grammatical category of voice in English serves, in part, to indicate who or what the clause is about.
