DREXEL, N.C. (QUEEN CITY HOMETOWN) — “I love our little bumblebees. It’s a mystery how they can fly.” In the one-stoplight town of Drexel, it’s unusual to see cars backed up on Main Street. It’s slow here in eastern Burke County. Some of that is due to its small-town nature, but mostly it’s a side effect of a loss they cannot ignore. “You realize some people can be kicked down so many times and so long, they lose hope,” said Mike Chandler.

(QUEEN CITY HOMETOWN) — The stories that play out inside a baseball diamond are often the subject of poetry, movies, and memories. “I love this, of course I do!” said Lu Rushing. “This is softball for everyone, but it’s family.” It’s a lifetime kind of love for Lu and dozens of other women who play softball for the ‘Sassy Softball Sisters League’ every Thursday night in Charlotte. “Way to stick together and not give up. That’s why it’s called team and not I!” cheered Sandy McGee.
