Maurício Angelo’s Biography

Maurício Angelo is an award-winning international investigative journalist and the founder of The Mining Observatory, a Brazilian based investigative journalism Centre and think tank established in 2015.

Hold a Master's Degree in Sustainable Development at the University of Brasília (UnB), grade 7 CAPES (maximum score).

Mauricio has taken on the task of investigating the extractive sector, specifically mining, earning him international acclaim. In 2019 he received of the Excellence in Journalism Award from the Inter American Press Association. Considered one of the Top 3 journalist experts in Extractive Sector in Brazil in 2022 and 2021.

He has been actively pursuing investigations, publishing a broad range of stories related to governance and transparency, indigenous peoples, human rights, climate change, and the role of extractives.

He participated as a speaker in the 11th Global Investigative Journalism Conference, hosted by the Global Investigative Journalism Network in Hamburg in 2019.

The Mining Observatory has played an important role in uncovering key stories, many of which have been published in UOL Notícias, Mongabay, El País Brasil, Intercept Brasil, Mining.com, Unearthed, Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), Reporter Brasil, and several other international media outlets in Portuguese, English, German, French and Spanish.

Maurício Angelo is a senior reporter, consultant, professor and speaker. Their stories both for Mining Observatory and as a freelancer reporter has been published worldwide.
