A natural depsipeptide antibiotic binds the E-site of the bacterial ribosome
Abstract A key challenge in addressing the antibiotic resistance crisis is identifying new antimicrobial compounds1. Although natural products produced by fungi and bacteria, particularly actinomycetes, have been the source of most antibiotics discovered over the past 80 years, they have fallen out of favour owing to the frequent rediscovery of known drug scaffolds2. The current perception is that antibiotic-producing actinomycetes have been over-mined and possess little novelty left to yield.
Flipping antimicrobial peptides in the exit tunnel of the bacterial ribosome
Abstract Proline-rich antimicrobial peptides (PrAMPs) kill bacteria by binding in the ribosomal nascent peptide exit tunnel. Type II PrAMPs bind in an orientation matching that of the nascent protein, trap the release factors and arrest ribosomes at stop codons. Conversely, Type I PrAMPs bind in an opposite orientation: their N-terminus invades the peptidyl transferase center arresting translation at start codons.

Paenilamicins are context-specific translocation inhibitors of protein synthesis - Nature Chemical Biology
Abstract The paenilamicins are a group of hybrid nonribosomal peptide–polyketide compounds produced by the honey bee pathogen Paenibacillus larvae that display activity against Gram-positive pathogens, such as Staphylococcus aureus. While paenilamicins have been shown to inhibit protein synthesis, their mechanism of action has remained unclear.
FOAM authorship: Who's teaching our learners?
INTRODUCTION Since it arose in 2002, free open-access medical education online resources (FOAM) has exploded in production, emergency medicine resident utilization, and even incorporation into formal curricula.1-8 FOAM presents different challenges to users than traditional resources such as journal articles and textbooks.

Opinion: Simple solution to Roxham Road problem
If ever there were a solution in search of a problem it is the implementation of the Safe Third Country Agreement (STCA). The Immigration and Refugee Board, created in 1989 by the Progessive Conservative Mulroney government, was humming along very smoothly until the Liberal government of Paul Martin decided in 2004 that a makeover was necessary and the STCA came into force.
Opinion | A Freedom Caucus for the Left
Before Kevin McCarthy could become speaker, he had to bend the knee to the true power in the Republican conference: the House Freedom Caucus. Since its creation in 2015, the Freedom Caucus has won battle after battle with the GOP establishment. In the most recent round, the caucus extracted a promise that McCarthy would use a debt ceiling fight as an opportunity to push for deep spending cuts.
SBF and the Injustice Democrats
When I looked into SBF’s political giving to write a follow up to last week’s piece, I thought I knew what I was looking for. It’s a subject I’ve written about before. But, when I looked at the end-of-cycle FEC data, the results were truly shocking. I found more evidence SBF was collaborating with AIPAC and Trump supporting billionaires to stop the growth of the squad and the electoral left.
MAGA = Fascism?
The debate about whether the MAGA movement is fascist has gone on for so long that it’s easy to have lost track of why it matters. In a piece titled “The End of Fascism,” Shadi Hamid tries to get at what’s at stake in the use of the word “fascism.” I think this piece clarifies the stakes of the debate, but gets the conclusions completely backwards.
INVESTIGATION: The Super PACs Trying To Take Down Working Class Candidates For Congress
By Max Berger Billionaire-funded super PACs are pouring money into seven key congressional districts to defeat working-class candidates – mostly women of color – in tight races. Four well-financed super PACs have spent over $18 million in just the past three months to help corporate-aligned Democrats maintain their control over the Democratic Party. Will Democrats Draw the Wrong Lessons From VA and NJ?
Will Democrats Draw the Wrong Lessons From VA and NJ?
Opinion | Virginia's election is a devastating lesson. Democrats are already ignoring it.
In a sane world, Terry McAuliffe’s loss in Virginia and Gov. Phil Murphy’s near miss in New Jersey would cause an honest examination of what’s working — and what isn’t — for the Democratic Party. McAuliffe is a centrist, corporate-backed Clintonite who lost to a Trumpist Republican while suffering losses among white voters without college degrees. You might think another resounding defeat like this would discourage future McAuliffes from running and silence their consultants and advisers.
Afghanistan war neocons like George W. Bush would like you to know this isn't their fault
The neoconservatives who launched the war in Afghanistan would very much like you to know the war’s ignominious ending is someone else's fault. In The Atlantic, Tom Nichols wrote a piece titled, “Afghanistan Is Your Fault,” saying the loss of the war should be blamed on American voters. Former Bush administration speechwriter David Frum said we could have won the war in Afghanistan with this one little trick (namely killing Osama bin Laden in December 2001 instead of May 2011). Eliot A.
Donald Trump Is Leaving, but American Fascism Is Just Getting Its Boots On
The events of the past 10 days have made clear what many of us have been saying for years: that Donald Trump is the leader of a fascist movement. There is an important and useful debate about whether fascism is the appropriate term. I am neither a scholar nor a journalist—I am a political organizer who is foremost concerned with the consequences of how we talk about the threat posed by Trump and, much more importantly, his millions of followers.
Here’s How the Left Builds on Biden’s Victory
In the US, as in the UK and Spain, a resurgent left has been blocked from gaining control of the levers of state by the presumed-dead establishment of a center-left party. After winning millions of votes in the primary, the left can claim a portion of the mandate granted to Joe Biden by a record 75,000,000 voters in the general election.
No reason for NBA to censor Norm Powell’s ‘Am I Next?” slogan
By Max BergerContributor Tue., July 21, 2020timer2 min. read Toronto Raptor Norm Powell thought he had a great idea. When the NBA negotiated the soon-to-start season with its players union, the agreement allowed players to replace the name on their jerseys with a personal statement on issues of racism and discrimination.
Bernie Sanders vs. the out-of-touch American Jewish establishment
As Jews in the U.S., we are taught over and over about the history of our persecution. American Jews are applying the lessons we learned from that history — and the reality of our current situation — by supporting Bernie Sanders.
American Jews shouldn’t let the right smear Ilhan Omar over a bad tweet
On Monday, the leadership of both the Democratic and Republican parties issued rebukes of Rep.
Jews must fight for black and Palestinian freedom as we fight for our own
To many in the Movement for Black Lives, Jewish contributions to the civil rights and other liberation movements pale in comparison to the force Jews muster to defend Israel’s indefensible occupation of the Palestinians.
Can a Left Tea Party Overthrow the Democratic Establishment?
In 2010, enraged grassroots conservatives launched an insurgency against the Republican establishment. The Tea Party movement ran a series of primary challengers accusing Republicans of being insufficiently oppositional to President Obama. Their insurgency was wildly successful. Within four years, they had picked off a sitting senator and the Majority Leader of the House, making it impossible for Republican politicians to break with their base for fear of losing a primary.

Bernie Sanders vs. the out-of-touch American Jewish establishment
Sanders' Jewish socialism, his recognition of the injustice of the occupation, is a rebuke to those in the U.S. and Israel who believe Jews should only care about other Jews’ freedom and dignity. No wonder they’re trying to marginalize him. Apr 16, 2016 Apr 16, 2016 As Jews in the U.S., we are taught over and over about the history of our persecution. American Jews are applying the lessons we learned from that history — and the reality of our current situation — by supporting Bernie Sanders.

How to Understand White Male Terrorism
Everywhere I look lately, there are signs of white men panicking about their supremacy over American society. A group of white men shot at young Black Lives Matter protesters on consecutive nights in Minneapolis last weekend, injuring five people. Donald Trump, still a leading Republican presidential candidate, proposed creating a database and ID cards for Muslims, leading even some Republicans to label him as a fascist.
Welcome to The Crack-Up
On Monday night, I sat down to write a piece about how White Americans are losing their shit. Everywhere I looked, there were signs of white race panic. White Student Unions are popping up around the country in response to demands that university administrations do more to fight racism on campus. The rhetoric against Syrian refugees has gotten so bad that Muslim Americans say the political climate is worse for them now than right after 9/11.
What Does "Never Again" Mean Today?
As it turned out, over 200 passengers of the S.S. St. Louis died in the Holocaust. Others survived, but many lived through death camps and persecution. Perhaps no story does more to convey how simple carelessness on the part of the public is the true enabler of a larger evil. Jews and other Americans are taught this history to ensure the next time another people face their possible destruction, the public will not act with such carelessness.
Thoughts on the First #DemDebate
The democratic primary electorate is ready to hear a message about democratic socialism that’s anti-oligarchy and calls upon regular people to come together to change the political system. Sander is a lovable dude to many (including me #JewishSocialistsWhoYellALot), but he’s also a crabby old man who doesn’t really get into the details or speak from the heart. He is the floor of what’s possible for that message, not the ceiling.
How to Add Politics to Our Protest
While the electorate is rarely excited for elections, the 2016 race takes place against the backdrop of a country on the brink of a crisis of democratic legitimacy. Congress, nominally the most important democratic institution in the country, has suffered from an approval rating averaging in the teens for more than four years. Facing a government held hostage by the 1 percent, many Americans are throwing up their hands: Turnout for the 2014 midterm elections dipped to a 72-year low.
