Our Commitment to Public Education
Max Page, MTA President Credit: Jonathan Ng Over these past eight years as your vice president and now president, I have repeatedly come back to two quotes that speak to our mission as educators, and as a union. They seem appropriate to share again in my last editorial for MTA Today. The first is from our 1780 state Constitution, largely written by John Adams.
MBTA subway ridership takes hit with slow zones
THE BOTTOM FELL out of the public transit industry at the start of COVID, and it's been a slow slog back for every agency - not just the MBTA. According to national subway data gathered by Chris Friend of the transit advocacy group TransitMatters, the MBTA for most of 2020, 2021, and the first half of 2022 built back subway ridership at roughly the same pace as some of its peers in the industry.
Striking shouldn't be against the law for teachers
EARLIER THIS YEAR, Woburn educators, addressing the grossly unfair pay offered to highly valued paraprofessionals, won a 40 percent starting-pay increase for the district's paras. The Woburn Teachers Association further took on the ever-growing problem of educator shortages by establishing a new minimum salary for classroom teachers that meets the goals of US Sen. Bernie Sanders' proposed legislation to establish a $60,000 minimum salary.
Mass. Teachers Association: Invest in — and reclaim — state's public schools, higher ed
Max Page and Deb McCarthy For years, the spring budget debate throughout Massachusetts was about how we could make do with less, how we had to pare back our visions for our children’s education, from our cities’ and towns’ schools to our commonwealth’s public colleges and universities. But the once-in-a-century victory we and our 115,000 members helped win by passing the Fair Share Amendment has moved us away from that crippling austerity narrative. On Election Day, we won greater tax fairness.
Millionaire Tax Wins in Massachusetts
For more than a century in Massachusetts everyone has paid the same income tax rate, from those who rake in millions to those working a minimum wage job. Until now. On November 8, the Raise Up Massachusetts coalition, led by unions and dozens of community and faith-based organizations, won passage of the Fair Share Amendment.
How Boy Scouts Racism Helped Spark LA’s Bloods & Crips Gangs
The Hollywood sign, the 405, golden beaches, swaying palm trees, Rodeo drive, the Bloods and Crips……there are few things more synonymous with Los Angeles, California. The Bloods and Crips, along with other infamous street gangs, are as “American” as apple pie, albeit not so wholesome, and they were sparked by two other great staples of the U.S.A. — racism and The Boy Scouts of America.
Public higher ed staff, resources being cut - CommonWealth Magazine
MASSACHUSETTS AGREES that public higher education has always been one of our calling cards, providing access to high-quality learning for students from all walks of life, regardless of income, language, or race. The education our students receive informs our future for generations to come. We teach our students to value science, health, and most of all, each other — so why do our funding policies tell a different story?
Pedophilia and Human Trafficking are Real, But No They Don’t Involve Pizza or Politics
I eat pizza a lot but guess what, pedophilia and human trafficking are not OK with me; I just friggin’ LOVE pizza. Oh, and I HATE politics—and deep-dish pizza too. But, in fairness, does anybody truly like deep-dish pizza? Really? I’m also not liking the 45th season of the USA right now. The star character presents as being exceedingly inauthentic and phony. This Donald Trump dude comes across as such a con-man, not to mention a brazen liar and sensationalist.
We Need a 21st-Century Works Progress Administration
How can we help the unemployed get good-paying work, advance toward a green world, and get more workers into unions? And at the same time rebuild what has been shattered by two generations of neoliberal attacks — a belief that government’s role is to build a more just society? A 21st century WPA. In the Great Depression of the 1930s the Works Progress Administration was one of the main New Deal agencies that put millions of unemployed back to work on public infrastructure projects.
Facing Mass Unemployment, We Need a 21st Century WPA
In the Great Depression the federal government launched a series of infrastructure and cultural projects on a scale never seen before, touching virtually every city and town across the country: the WPA. Here women in New Mexico are weaving rag rugs. Photo: Russell Lee, Library of Congress. How can we help the unemployed get good-paying work, advance toward a green world, and get more workers into unions?

Dear white people—let’s focus on WHY not WHAT BLM rioters and looters are doing what they’re doing - CelebMagazine
Scrolling through social media, I’ve seen post after post from (majority white, but also some affluent black) people talking about what BLM rioters and looters are doing to their “own communities” but I’ve seen none asking why? That was until I stumbled across one that shared a video—which you can watch below.
In Defense Of Sweet Home Alabama—Why Its Racist Legacy Is Not Deserved
Lynyrd Skynyrd's 1974 “revenge song" Sweet Home Alabama, is perceived by many to be a put down of Neil Young and his lily-livered anti-racist liberalism —and has become the theme tune for many an uber conservative, not to mention a slew of neo-Nazi white supremacist groups.

There’s a growing number of US citizens who believe JFK Jr. faked his own death as part of a political “master chess game” that he’s playing with Donald Trump. Stay with us here as the theory gets curiouser and curiouser the deeper you fall down the Alt-right rabbit hole.

Just when the public had finally managed to start putting Jodi Arias out of their collective memory, up she pops in the hugely popular Fox network comedy—like a jail-dwelling, Mormon-killing, bad apple. Lorena Bobbitt Thinks Cutting Off Her Hubby's Dick Is Still Pretty Damn Funny The 35-year-old became the subject of a sudden Google search spike Sunday night after Peter Griffin was caught in the act googling “Jodi Arias bikini"….. as you do.
Guest column Max Page: The answer is all around us: A New Deal response to coronavirus
I haven’t walked this much in years. Working from home and desperate to get away from my gridded Zoom cell, I have found myself roaming my town, walking by the empty storefronts of downtown Amherst, and wandering through my University of Massachusetts campus. I regularly pass by Goodell Hall, the university’s first major library building after it grew from the Massachusetts Agricultural College into the Massachusetts State College on its way to becoming the UMass in 1947.

Draft dodger Donald Trump says avoiding STDs was his own personal 'Vietnam'
Donald Trump Vietnam STDs comparison just about sums him up really. Some have dared to criticize Donald Trump over his avoidance of fighting in the Vietnam war. As Popdust previously reported, the then-22-year-old Trump managed to draft dodge five times—four because of college, and once because of his "bad feet." He explained all in an interview back in 2011: I had student deferments…. it was a long time ago… I had student deferments then ultimately I had a medical deferment because of my feet.

Colleges and universities are some of the oldest and most stable institutions in the country, and as such they feature environments that facilitate an attachment to place few other institutions can claim. Wannabe Rapper Shoots Himself In The Face In Bid For Fame
How about a bullet to the face? Kasper Knight, AKA Kasper The Phantom, thought that was a small price to pay for a shot at the spotlight (so to speak). The Indianapolis wannabe rapper deliberately shot himself in the cheek, because, he says, he "felt like taking a bullet to the face." As you do. Knight captured the tremendously stupid stunt on video which he posted on Vimeo—you can watch it right here on Popdust.
Sites of Conscience: Shockoe Bottom, Manzanar, and Mountain Meadows
The pressure of the wind is relentless, as air channeled between the Sierra Nevada and Inyo mountain ranges flows down through the Owens Valley in eastern California. You feel it as you try to walk and are buffeted like tumbleweed. You feel it in the dust whipped up into your eyes and hair. That’s what the oral histories and the novels tell us, as well, in memories shared about Manzanar.
