1. Introduction Worldwide, plastic use is growing year by year, with current figures showing plastic production exceeding 368 million tons in 2019 [ 1 ]. Furthermore, the waste produced is not disposed in the correct way. As plastic pervades every aspect of life and then breaks down into smaller particles, the possible impacts of micro- and nano-plastics on the human body and the environment are of global concerns [ 2 ].
