Millions of business owners are about to retire. They should sell to their employees Original
American workers feel their footing in the economy slipping. The stock market has hit high after high, while workers’ share of national income is at its lowest point in at least 75 years. Add to that an affordability crisis hitting families’ checkbooks and many businesses’ eager push to utilize artificial intelligence, and workers’ sentiments appear well-founded.
The bear roars
On Oct. 2, 2021, a new iteration of Griz club hockey was set to play its season opener. The team’s general manager, Tucker Sargent, hoped around 200 fans would show up, enough to fill Missoula’s indoor rink to a little under 20% of its capacity. Not only would it bring some energy into the building, but it would also give the club hope of surviving. Sargent hoped he had finally created a formula that worked. The first incarnation of Griz hockey had folded due to lack of financial support.
To improve economic opportunity, we need better transit
Going to morning class meant a four-hour journey by bus and shuttle for J, an adult vocational education student in Louisiana’s Capital Region. The drive to campus would have been 25 minutes by car, but J didn’t have one, and the after-class commute would eat up another two of the three hours left to him before his night job started. J’s story isn’t unique. Those seeking decent employment and the organizations that serve them have long pointed to inadequate transportation as a chief obstacle.

International students’ status remains murky as feds respond to MSU lawsuit Attorneys representing the federal government responded to an American Civil Liberties Union lawsuit filed on behalf of two Montana State University international students who had their F-1 visas revoked. An F-1 visa allows international students to study in the United States. One University of Montana international student, as well as one other MSU student, also had their visas revoked, but did not file a lawsuit.

Bernie Sanders, AOC come to UM for ‘Fighting Oligarchy’ tour
Roughly 9,000 people came to the Adams Center to “fight oligarchy” as part of Sen. Bernie Sanders’ tour of the same name. "The American people, whether they are Democrats, Republicans or Independents, do not want billionaires to control our government or buy our elections," Sanders said in a press release about the event. "They do not want huge tax breaks for the wealthiest people in the country paid for by massive cuts to Medicaid and other programs that working families rely on.

Creative car theft, crime of passion and investing? In this economy?
Welp, this week it would seem crime on campus has become a group project because just a few people are doing all of the work. Come on y’all, step it up! Actually don’t. Hot take here, but less crime is good. MARCH 29 - CREATIVE CAR THEFT Two people, who are not University of Montana students, wanted to hike the M together. Sounds like a lovely time between besties, right? Bestie one began his idyllic stroll up the M and texts bestie two to bring him some shoes.

Over half of U.S. forest service and land loses protection; Federal cuts hit Missoula food bank; Bernie Sanders to visit UM
OVER HALF OF U.S. FOREST SERVICE LAND LOSES PROTECTION On April 3, Brooke Rollins, the nation’s agriculture secretary, released a memo establishing an “emergency situation determination” on 112 million acres of U.S. Forest Service land, around 59% of the Forest Service’s total acreage. The area includes most of the land surrounding Yellowstone National Park, a majority of the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex and forest land south and west of Glacier National Park.
A new age of ‘Native Ball’
In Browning, Montana, when the Friday night lights flicker on and the doors to the gymnasium open, the small town shakes off its quiet reputation. The town of around 1,000 transforms into a sports hotspot with the ability to fill a stadium four times its capacity. It’s the place to witness the perfect combination of beauty and zeal, of natural talent and unflinching work ethic and of quiet pride and thunderous trailblazing.
MSU under investigation for alleged racial discrimination; City of Missoula projects $4 Million deficit
Montana State University is among 44 other schools listed as “now under investigation for allegedly engaging in race-exclusionary practices in their graduate programs.” The news came via a March 14 memo from the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights. The memo stated it launched the investigations following a separate Feb.

Missoula to close homeless shelter; delayed fondling and partner assault reported to UMPD
The city of Missoula is closing the Johnson Street temporary homeless shelter in August, after losing federal funding from the COVID-19 pandemic that paid for it. According to Mayor Andrea Davis, the city is working on raising $400,000 to get as many shelter residents in permanent housing as possible.
Concert commotion, teenagers scare me and parking spot standoff
On the lighter side of crime, University police had to deal with one rambunctious child and three adults acting like one this week. If you must act like an animal, could you at least wait until spring break in Florida? Do whatever you want then: I used to live in that shithole, so trust me, you can’t make that state worse than it already is.
Don’t let plane paranoia ruin spring break
As spring break nears, many students are anxiously awaiting the opportunity to get out of town and travel to the vacations of their dreams. But for many, a recent and seemingly never-ending series of plane crashes, air disasters and manufacturing mishaps have eroded their trust in air travel and put those dreams in jeopardy.
UM Track and Field breaks 10 school records in first half of season
The University of Montana's track and field team broke five school records in the Big Sky indoor championship and 10 total in the indoor season. On Feb. 7 freshman Braden Ankeny erased 25 years of history in two hundredths of a second. The freshman sprinter rocketed through the 200 meter to post a time of 21.49s, breaking the previous track and field school indoor record of 21.51s that had stood since the year 2000. Two weeks later on Feb.
Griz basketball controls destiny to Big Sky pennant
Montana basketball head coach Travis DeCuire brought in the largest class of transfers in team history last offseason, which, alongside rising returners, has rocketed the team to a 13-2 conference record. The team only needs to win all their remaining games to guarantee its first seed in the Big Sky Conference while eleventh-year coach DeCuire is a sole win away from becoming the winningest coach in team history. “Us all being new was something we could bond about,” junior guard Malik Moore said.
The view through the eyes of a pole vaulter
In 2008, a young Erica Bartolina fixated nervously on a screen. She had just made the U.S. Olympic team after she pole vaulted her career best height. Yet before she watched her own replay, one thought crossed her mind. “What if everything is perfect?” Erica Bartolina said. “This is the best I could ever be?” As the video played, her trained mind happily picked up a dozen minute flaws and noted the ways to fix them.
Lady Griz put up lots of offense but still fall to NAU
Lady Griz Basketball fell 76-96 to the Lumberjacks on Feb. 8, marking the most points that Northern Arizona have ever put up against the Griz in the Dahlberg Arena. “If you’d had told me [before the game] we scored 76, I would’ve thought we had a pretty good shot at it,” acting head coach Nate Harris said.
New hopes for Montana’s newest program
Through the first decade of its existence, Griz softball has given fans only two winning seasons to celebrate, but a new coach is restoring the players' confidence to win and is trying to implement the process to do it. “The record will mean nothing to me, because I don't think the record is ever going to be a representation of what this group accomplished this year.
The search for objectively the worst game in Griz football history
Through the first hundred years of its history, Griz football has largely made “the Mecca of the FCS” proud, with fans lamenting over the unforgettable games that secured the Griz national titles or the Great Divide trophy. But when it comes to the games Griz fans would prefer to forget, finding the worst one is a far more opinionated and cumbersome task. This week, the Kaimin attempted to make unbiased criteria and evaluated the roughly 1,100 games in Griz history to find the team’s darkest hour.
Lady Griz look to defense and home crowd for comeback
Coming off a 23-10 season, the Lady Griz have struggled as graduations have declawed the offense and left the 6-10 team grappling for an identity. “We have a lot of good pieces. How those pieces fit together has been what we’re still trying to figure out, I think, which is crazy at this time of year,” Head Coach Brian Holsinger said in a Jan. 15 interview. Holsinger himself took a personal leave from the team on Jan. 16, with associate coach Nate Harris stepping up as an interim leader.
From losses to triumphs: Inside the mind of one of UM’s winningest programs
In the last seven years that Chis Citowicki has been the head coach of Griz soccer the team has won seven Big Sky championships spread across the regular and postseason. That has given the team a big target on its back and even bigger expectations that require absolute focus in every aspect of the game to overcome with this year’s Big Sky Playoffs at home as the top seed being no different.
Filling the ranks of a thankless job in sports
On a brisk November night in a musty locker room, a small group stretched, laced up their skates and discussed the upcoming game. With three minutes until puck drop, they walked through the tunnel and stepped onto the ice with nervousness building in their stomachs. As they did a couple laps and went about their final preparation, they were largely ignored by an unsympathetic crowd. They calmed their nerves, reminding themselves that they’ve trained for this.
Griz basketball program looks to build on 2023-24 success
Coming off a solid season, Griz men’s basketball lost two-thirds of both its point scorers and position players this off season. However, the number of transfers has exploded since the transfer portal, which uses technology to streamline the process for student athletes, opened. Transferring was made even easier in the summer of 2024 thanks to an antitrust settlement reached by the NCAA that stopped it from limiting transfer eligibility.
New softball coach looks to revive program
In the summer of 2024, a sinking Griz softball program received new leadership, replacing its seven-year head coach with Stefanie Ewing, a coach who took a similarly struggling California squad to the brink of a championship. “For me as a coach, I just believe in inspiring young people and trying to get them to be confident young women,” Ewing said.
Griz hockey off to a solid start under new head coach
In September, a revived Griz hockey team entered its fourth season and posted a 8-2 record through 10 games while under the leadership of new coach Marcus Baxter. Baxter took the head coaching job in the spring and is joined by last year’s head coach Mike Anderson, who now is the associate head coach. “Mike’s doing an awesome job and we’re learning how to handle the team together,” Baxter said.
Sophomores lead the way for up-and-coming XC squad
Few conferences in the country have stiffer cross-country competition than the Big Sky, but the University of Montana’s Carson Steckelberg and Henry Ballinger are helping to level the scales by leading the Griz as sophomores. “Carson is very mature when it comes to racing [and] when it comes to training,” head coach Doug Fraley said.
Boone helps best defense in Big Sky history
Last year Griz soccer had statistically the best defensive season in Big Sky Conference history. It woudn’t have been possible without center back Charley Boone who led all field players in minutes played and was voted the team’s defensive most valuable player. “Not only is she a good defender, she’s a very good distributor out of the back,” head coach Chris Citowiki said.
Group offers Name, Image and Likeness deal for senator endorsement
Montana athletes were recently offered a NIL — name, image and likeness — deal of up to $2,400 each to make a series of videos endorsing Senator Jon Tester on behalf of a largely anonymous organization called Montana Together. The group is not associated with Tester’s campaign. In 2021, the NCAA — the governing body of college athletics — approved a policy allowing athletes to use the fame associated with their name, image and likeness to partner with brands and receive monetary compensation.

Breaking the Silence: How Connection Saves Lives in the Fight Against Suicide
Adam was my brother-in-blood and brother-in-arms. We grew up with a tense rivalry as children, which eventually blossomed into genuine friendship when we were stationed together with the First Marine Division. Both of us left our childhood homes, and the service, carrying different shades of C-PTSD. While I sought out and leaned into support systems—reaching out to fellow veterans, sharing with my wife, and finding solace in community—Adam’s struggle became a solitary one, isolated and silent.
Outside hitter Jackie Howell excels with her multifaceted play
After transferring from Tyler Junior College, Jackie Howell and the freshmen class have reinvigorated the Griz volleyball program from 2-14 in 2020 to 17-12 in 2022. Howell is far from the first volleyball player in her family with a legacy. Her mother, Dr. Sonia Treviño, won a pair of conference titles playing at Florida State University. Howell also has numerous aunts and cousins with volleyball legacies of their own.
Griz football out-duels Missouri State 29-24
Montana football began its campaign to repeat a Big Sky league title with a blacked out all bear bout against Missouri State; a team belonging to the same Missouri Valley conference as South Dakota state, who crushed the Grizzlies’ run in the FCS finals last year. With a sold out crowd of 26,483 Griz fanatics looking on, the Missouri State Bears kicked off with Isaiah Childs receiving in the end zone and returning the ball to the UM 26-yard line thanks to fierce blocking from his teammates.
New indoor facility set for completion in late September
After reinstalling the turf and several other delays, the University of Montana’s new $10.2 million indoor practice facility is temporarily open to practice without its roof. The indoor bubble and lighting features begin installation in the start of September and are expected to take roughly a month. The 111,000 square foot, privately-funded indoor facility features a turf football field, six sprinting lanes and an area for the field components of track and field.
PaddleHeads offense leads dominant start to season
The Missoula PaddleHeads have started their season with a 24-7 record thanks in large part to leading the twelve team Pioneer League in nearly every offensive category. These categories include hits, home runs, runs batted in, on base percentage and slugging percentage. The team has averaged over 11 runs a game while tallying 55 homers on the season in the hitter friendly Pioneer League. The Glacier Range Riders trail closely behind with a second place record of 20-11 record.
A Connected Metropolis: Los Angeles Elites and the Making of a Modern City, 1890–1965. By Maxwell Johnson
Maxwell Johnson analyzes the history of Los Angeles’s rise to international prominence by focusing on the elite men who helped shape the city’s public image. Responding to A. K. Sandoval Strausz’s point that urban histories need to embrace transnational history, Johnson explores Los Angeles’s connections to and ruptures with places near and far, from the Owens Valley to Mexico to Japan.
Six-year track athlete Xavier Melice returns to freshman-of-the-year form
On March 22, track and field athlete Xavier Melice blitzed through the third leg of the 4x100 meter relay to help break a University of Montana record that stood since 1969. It was one of the many highlights of Melice’s six years at the UM and 20 years in a the sport that involved him overcoming a potential career-ending injury.
For the Love of Club
It’s 9 a.m. on a warm Saturday on the outskirts of Bonner, Montana. The 20-odd men of the University of Montana club baseball team slowly trickle into Kelly Pine Field, making sure to park their cars as far away from the field as possible. They’ve all played long enough to see a windshield cracked by a foul ball. Some holding coffee and others donning gloves, the players begin some light defensive practice.
UM young guns shine for golf
On April 8, in the first round of the Bobcat Desert Classic, the University of Montana women’s golf team shot a four-player total of 288 to tie for both the par and the best round in program history. Kendall Hayward led the performance thanks to a great first nine holes that led her to shoot two under par in the first round. In collegiate golf, five players compete and the lowest four individual scores are totaled up to create a team score. The lowest overall team score wins.
UM’s Spikeball Club’s continued growth means students may soon compete in tournaments
Despite being a relatively new sport, few activities have become as popular in college recreation as roundnet, more commonly known as Spikeball because of the brand that helped revitalize the sport. The University of Montana is no exception to this with the Spikeball Club offering both casual recreation and serious competition against peers and in tournaments the team will likely start attending this summer.
UM Track and Field breaks 55-year-old school record at Al Manuel Invitational
In its first home meet of the season, the University of Montana Track and Field team vehemently defended home turf and broke a half century-old record in the process. A men’s 4x100 meter relay squad featuring Teagun Holycross, Jason Upton, Xavier Melice and Cooper Hewett ran a time of 40.35 seconds to best the previous school record of 40.44 seconds set in 1969.
Presley Jantzi excelling with UM softball and leading team in batting average
A batter tasked with hitting a baseball has roughly four-tenths of a second to react to a variety of pitches, which makes hitting a baseball one of the hardest things to do in sports. What is often overlooked is that D1 softball batters have the same or even less reaction time as their D1 baseball counterparts.
