Jee Leong Koh is a New York–based poet, teacher, editor, publisher, and social-justice activist. I first met him in Singapore in 2014. We shared a publisher, Math Paper Press, with his Payday Loans and my Today, Fish Only. A well-toned man donning a sleeveless shirt with the words gay but not yet equal, he was mobbed by enthusiastic readers, mostly young men and women, at his book launch in a downtown shopping mall.

Trained as both a historian and philologist, he is the author of works on premodern Moroccan history and the editor of significant source texts in religion and history. Abu Musa’s Women Neighbors: A Historical Novel from Morocco was the first of his novels to be translated into English.
