Michael de Yoanna’s Biography

I'm a journalist with more than two decades of experience, much of it as an investigative reporter and editor. I’m expert at taking complex findings and crafting nuanced long-form narratives in audio/podcast, print, and film/documentary.

Whether you live in a mansion or have no home to speak of, there is nothing more valuable than your story. At the end of the day, your story is everything.

I got my start as a newspaper reporter and went on to spend several years as a freelancer, balancing local gigs with national assignments (CBS News to Salon). I report, gather great audio, shoot stylish video, take solid photos, craft successful freedom of information requests, dive into records and data to find relevant themes, script, write, produce, edit, voice, and appear on-air.

I am currently the investigative reporter at KUNC public radio (NPR affiliate for Northern Colorado). I strive for impact, like our co-investigations into how paramedics sedated hundreds of people during episodes with police, including Elijah McClain. Our stories helped inspire a state law to limit the practice and a bill in Congress to try to do the same. I was one of two editors (as news director) helping a reporter unearth harassment allegations at the state Capitol. Our coverage led lawmakers to expel one of their own.

I've been grateful to win dozens of awards, including a duPont-Columbia silver baton in 2017 for co-reporting with NPR's Investigative Unit on combat soldiers mistreated by their commanders after showing signs of mental health issues. I've won two national Edward R. Murrow awards for other investigations.
