Short answer: They don't really "turn 90 degrees". Or rather, they probably weren't supposed to. In the fourth draft (the one just prior to filming) of the script, Lucas gives us a hint about how he envisioned the Proton Torpedoes working: I think by "ninety degrees" that Lucas was probably imagining that the pilot had to be directly above the exhaust port in order for it to drop go all the way down into the reactor.

The Battlestar Fleet contains at least one medical ship, the Inchon Velle. It would appear that the ship has a registered psychiatrist on board who would presumably have access to a wide pharmacopia. There's absolutely no reason to assume that the Galactica, in the intervening two seasons hasn't restocked their own medical supplies, nor that they can't simply ask for certain drugs to be transported over (from other ships) as needed.

For me, the pronunciation of 'Smaug' has always been with 'Sm' as in 'smile' and 'aug' as in 'August' or 'Augment'. With Smaug having a horde of 'golden treasure' and Smaug representing a symbol of greed or lust for gold in the book and other renditions of the story, I would ask how one would pronounce 'auric' or 'aurous' both of which relate to gold.
