BENTON HARBOR, Mich. -- Dr. Simone Griffin will step down as Superintendent for Benton Harbor Area Schools. "This was not an easy decision, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have served this district and community. I have seen firsthand the resilience, care, and dedication that define Benton Harbor Area schools, and I remain confident in the strength of this district." Griffin was hired as BHAS Superintendent just under a year ago.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- South Bend schools will require students to power off, silence, and keep their personal communication devices out of sight during the school day. Starting on July 1 a new student cell phone directive will take place in accordance with Indiana law. This includes cell phones, smartwatches, headphones, and earbuds. Exceptions are available for documented medical, educational, accessibility needs, approved instructional activities, and emergency situations.

MISHAWAKA, Ind. — ABC57 received video from a community member Monday of a confrontation between a Mishawaka police officer and what appears to be a teenage boy. The video was taken Saturday night during the city's 4th of July celebration at Central Park. The man who captured the scene, Timmy Billheimer, says he saw teens spraying strangers with water guns throughout the night.

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. -- Police in Benton Harbor are looking for the vandals who damaged multiple mausoleums at the city-owned cemetery. The suspects prying open doors and potentially stealing valuable metal to sell for scrap. Dealing with crime is not something cemetery manager George Rose has to deal with very often. He says he was surprised to see not one, not two, not three, but four mausoleums at his cemetery vandalized. "This world is going crazy, nobody has respect for the dead," said Rose.

ELKHART, Ind. -- An Elkhart man faces accusations of molesting a middle school girl in a church. Investigators say 19-year-old Antonio Mikell was in the same bible study class as the alleged 13-year-old victim. Mikell allegedly entered the girl's bathroom and assaulted the victim during a break. Officials say security footage they viewed appears to show the victim leaving the bathroom, with Mikell following seconds later.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- A South Bend man that was arrested and charged for the 2007 murder of his wife is no longer in custody. Lucio Lerma was previously being held without bond until Friday, June 26. He was released on his own recognizance. He was charged in March for the murder of his wife Delia Lerma in December of 2007. Court records say the prosecution objected to his pre-trial release.

ELKHART, Ind. -- An Elkhart man faces multiple charges for the alleged sexual assault of a child. 19-year-old Carlos Cruz Hernandez was taken into custody on June 23. Officials say the alleged victim told an adult that alleged repeated sexual assault began about four years ago. The victim allegedly told investigators that they were assaulted more than five times since the first incident. When officers arrived on the scene, Hernandez allegedly told them the victim's statements were true.

STARKE COUNTY, Ind. -- The Starke County Sheriff's Office has released new suspect details in a suspected hit and run crash. Investigators say deputies were dispatched just before 6 p.m. Saturday, June 27 to the area of County Road 350 West and County Road 500 South near North Judson. Officers found the body of 45-year-old Phillip Land of Knox on the scene.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- A Goshen man is charged with Resisting Law Enforcement and Competing in a Speed Contest after an alleged weekend drag race. Officers were dispatched to Nimtz Parkway and Moreau Court in South Bend on Sunday, June 28. According to documents, officers found about 100 vehicles parked in the area. They then allegedly saw Madden Douglas and another unknown vehicle driving extremely quickly. Prosecutors say officers determined the vehicles were racing and put on their lights.
