WASHINGTON (TNND) — The House passed a short-term extension of an expiring surveillance program early Friday morning, just hours before it was set to expire, after a series of failed votes and internal divisions among Republicans. The surveillance authority of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA Act) is set to expire on Monday. Lawmakers approved a 10-day extension shortly after 2 a.m. in a voice vote, sending the measure to the Senate as Congress races to keep the authority in place.

AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) — Some Amarillo residents are raising privacy and equity concerns about the city’s growing network of Flock cameras and other license plate readers used by police, as the City Council recently approved accepting a Homeland Security grant for additional cameras. Amarillo police already use license plate readers and about 80 Flock cameras around the city. Police Chief Tom Hover said the Amarillo Police Department has not decided where the new cameras will be placed.
AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) — More than $620,000 in federal rent assistance meant to help Amarillo’s homeless residents was instead stolen by three former city employees, the latest of whom has now pleaded guilty in federal court. Selene Varela, a former city employee, pleaded guilty at the federal courthouse in Amarillo in connection with the embezzlement of federal funds. According to court documents obtained by ABC 7 News, Varela embezzled more than $41,000.
WASHINGTON (TNND) — The Department of Justice is investigating the sexual assault allegations against the now-former California Rep. Eric Swalwell, a source told Fox News Digital. Five women came forward within the last week, accusing Swalwell of sexual assault and harassment. The Los Angeles and Manhattan District Attorneys also opened investigations into the matters. Swalwell denied the allegations.

Donald Ray McCray was convicted on four of five charges he faced, including three counts of mailing a threatening communication and one count of false information and hoaxes. McCray sent envelopes with white powder to two federal courthouses -- Amarillo and Fort Worth.
