WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. labor market bounced back in August as employers added a surprising 162,000 jobs, ending a summer of lackluster hiring growth with a bang. The unemployment rate remained at a low 4.1%. Hiring far exceeded the 65,000 jobs that forecasters had expected, according to a poll by FactSet. Labor Department revisions also looked good, adding 55,000 to June and July payrolls. Employers created 21,000 jobs in July; the Labor Department had originally reported that they’d cut 23,000.

COEUR d’ALENE — Senior Jolie Warren had 19 kills and the visiting Lakeland Hawks rallied in the final three sets to beat the Lake City Timberwolves 18-25, 8-25, 25-19, 25-21, 17-15 on Thursday night at Lake City. “I’m proud of how our girls never gave up,” Lakeland coach Kelsie Badger said. “They stayed calm, trusted each other, and continued to fight until the very end. That kind of resilience is what makes this team special.” Maddi Justesen added 10 kills and three aces for Lakeland (4-4).

Vandal men to play Boise State in exhibition again For the second straight season, Idaho men’s basketball will raise the curtain on its season with an exhibition game against in-state rival Boise State in the state’s capital on Saturday, Oct. 10. The rivalry was renewed for the first time since November 2014 with last year’s exhibition game in Boise, which drew over 4,000 and was won by Boise State, 89-83. This year’s meeting, set for 4 p.m. PT on Oct.

• BOYS COEUR d’ALENE — Senior Brett Johnson notched a hat trick and junior Blake Baune had two goals and an assist to power Coeur d’Alene past Lewiston 11-0 in a nonleague match at Coeur d’Alene High on Thursday. “Today was a really good for us to be dominant from minute one,” Coeur d’Alene coach Robbie Harmelink said.
