NORTH MANKATO — New pavement, safety upgrades and other improvements coming to Highway 169 in Mankato-North Mankato won’t shut down the busy highway for the entire construction season next year. Overall construction — including preliminary work on frontage roads adjacent to the highway and lane closures in the final stages of paving — will likely consume every bit of available time from when the frost leaves the ground in April until winter’s chill returns in November.

A tornado reportedly made landfall near Olcott just before 7 p.m. Wednesday. The National Weather Service in Buffalo confirmed that a waterspout, reported on Lake Ontario near the village, had transitioned onto land and was being tracked. The Niagara County Sheriff’s Office said they received a report of a tornado crossing a property on Johnson Creek Road. A stormchaser posted video on social media of what he described as a tornado in the vicinity of the intersection of Routes 78 and 18 in Olcott.

Last year I barely had any growth on a newly planted raspberry bed. Yes, moved some again. This year, they really took off and are just starting to really produce. I grow two fall bearing varieties, ruby and autumn bliss. These plants are remnants of my half acre of raspberries from more years ago than I will admit to. Moved here, gifted there, moved back and forth between my sister, in the field, to the driveway garden, to the perennial garden.

CUMBERLAND — Richard Pravlik said he’s an investor who works to improve houses in the city, but feral felines and other problems are destroying the area. “The cat population … expands every year,” he said of roughy 50 strays near his Race Street home. “This year we had seven litters.” The wild cats roll around on his deck, defecate in flower beds and make the area smell bad. “It reeks of cat feces and urine … nobody should live like that,” Pravlik said.
