Greg van Avermaet has been appointed as Head of Riding Experience by Italian brand Basso Bikes. Belgian ex-pro Van Avermaet rode in the WorldTour for Swiss team BMC Racing and its successor CCC team from 2011 until 2021, when he switched to the AG2R-Citroen team for the 2021 to 2023 seasons, also riding BMC bikes, prior to his retirement from road racing. During that time, he won Paris-Roubaix in 2017, a number of other Classics and the 2016 Rio Olympics road race gold medal.

Tyre levers are an essential part of your cycling tool kit. After all, sooner or later you’re going to have to remove a tyre from your wheel rim, whether that’s to replace it or to fix the bane of cyclists’ like, a puncture. You can buy tyre levers for next to nothing, but it’s worth looking for something that’s at least physically substantial. Cheap tyre levers may be too bendy to offer the leverage to get a tight fitting tyre on or off a rim.

The New Year can feel a bit meh for cyclists, what with the extra kilos (perhaps) gained over Christmas and ice, snow and general cold and damp to look forward to for at least a couple of months. Rouvy feels your pain and has launched a winter virtual training camp, taking in real world video of rides around Calpe, Tenerife and Girona to keep you motivated. They may even be better than the real thing – after all, even Calpe doesn’t guarantee warmth at this time of year.

Winter training is usually either about wrapping yourself up like a left-over Christmas present and braving the ice, snow, wind, rain, fallen trees, floods, landslides and whatever else, or pushing out watts on the trainer indoors for hours. Indoor cycling app MyWhoosh has a better idea though: it has launched monthly MyWhoosh Treasure Hunts, which it says offer shares of a Bitcoin prize pot for exploring the 1,150-plus kilometres of virtual roads on the MyWhoosh platform.

After endless teasing, 32in wheels for MTB are now a thing, and they look set to make a big impact in the world of XC racing in particular. Promising better roll-over performance and lower rolling resistance than 29ers, 32in wheels address every shortcoming of 29ers and have literally no downsides. It now seems only a matter of time before we see the emergence of 32in-wheeled gravel bikes, and I for one will welcome that moment wholeheartedly, because frankly I’ve had enough of 700c.
