The Clipper
Online/Digital
This is the official website for Everett Community College’s student news-gathering organization, The Clipper. Powered by student writers and editors, The Clipper aims to have student voices heard, report accurate information and to reflect the EvCC and surrounding community transparently.
The Clipper has served the student body and college community at large since 1943. Over the years, The Clipper’s styles have changed as have the students on staff, yet our purpose doesn’t change.
In January of 2017, the 75-year newsprint legacy made the leap to magazine format. Print editions of The Clipper are available at many locations on campus. Look for the Clipper-red boxes. Source

Summer — the season of sun, beaches and vacation. As the spring quarter reaches its end, one needs to figure out what they’re going to do with their break. Some of you may be staying home with your families. Some of you might be working full-time or taking summer classes. I, for one, will be birding as much as possible. I recently spent a week in New York City for a graduation and was lucky enough to spend my free time birding around the city.
In the wake of San Juan Island
On the rocky shores of Washington, you may have been lucky to spot a creature or two scuttering within the crevices. With many tide pools lining the Washington shorelines, there’s often a plethora of life scattered within and around them. For these intertidal critters, there’s no better place to be than the San Juan Islands. On May 30, I had the opportunity to travel with the EvCC Marine Biology majors and fellow Marine Biology students on an all-day excursion to San Juan Island.
Swiped the bag and stole the record
Earlier in the season, Zenk etched his name into EvCC history by breaking the previous all-time record of 39 stolen bases and setting a new mark for future players to chase. Since then, the sophomore outfielder has shattered that record with 77 career stolen bases, establishing himself as one of the most dangerous runners in Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC). The 20-year-old from Brier, Washington became a key player for the No. 1-seeded Trojans in the NWAC standings.
Mysthaven
The perfect time to get away from the stuffiness of school and work might just be on a sunny weekend at Whidbey Island. Whidbey Island Ren Faire was held from May 23 to 24, starting from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. with many activities and vendors to explore while being in elaborate costumes and in character for the time.
The voice of Everett hockey
Nineteen years after taking over as the Everett Silvertips public address announcer, Greg Piland still has the same pregame goal. “I just pray and say, ‘I ask to sound just like dad,’” Piland said. The microphone once belonged to his father, David Piland, who served as the team’s original public address announcer before passing away from brain cancer in 2007.
Still rocking on
What’s left to do when you’ve had a 60-year career and written dozens of number one songs? For Paul McCartney the answer seems to be to just keep going. Released on May 29, “The Boys of Dungeon Lane” is McCartney’s 20th studio album, and his 40th if you count his work as a member of The Beatles and Wings. At 83 years old and with a net worth of over a billion dollars, Paul McCartney has no real need to ever work again — yet he clearly still loves performing.
Orca makes a worldwide splash
Thanks to the Ocean Research College Academy (ORCA), EvCC is now recognized as a global contributor to marine research. ORCA a Running Start program that focuses on applying analytical thinking to marine-based research in the Possession Sound. It was founded in 2003 and gives high school students the opportunity to earn an Associate in Arts and Sciences Direct Transfer Agreement. Their permanent facility is located in the Everett Marina.
Mascot mentality
Heavy is the head that wears a much larger, terry cloth head. And I was told that it can get pretty humid, too. Working as EvCC’s college mascot, the Trojan, is one of several publicity jobs filled by actively enrolled students each year, involving its own unusual challenges and a great deal of responsibility. The Trojan faces the impressive undertaking of being one of the most visible and involved students on campus while remaining completely anonymous.
A bittersweet ending
Inside of Parks Student Union just past Campus Gyro and the cafe is the Trojan Annex. On May 28, graduates gathered here to decorate their caps with friends. It all solidified the fact that the 2026 graduation is just around the corner. Arnav Pillay, one of the activities board coordinators, said that this event was organized for the last couple of years. “It’s like a legacy type of thing we do,” he said.
Nothing left unsaid
Four years after the initial release of his breakout album “Stick Season,” Vermont singer-songwriter Noah Kahan returns with his fourth studio album “The Great Divide.” The album was released on April 24 and featured 17 songs. On April 25, Kahan released a deluxe version of the album titled “The Great Divide: The Last Of The Bugs” that mixed in four songs, bringing the tracklist up to 21 with a total length of one hour and 36 minutes.
