Building a Better Zinnia
BREED YOUR OWN ZINNIAS Zinnia cultivation is not complicated, but it does require patience, perseverance, and curiosity. Patience is needed because it takes at least six years to get a zinnia from first selection to seed sales. I started breeding ‘Prairie Peach’ in 2020 from an unusual flower that appeared in a cactus zinnia mix. It took me years to get the variety stable and have enough seed to sell. Perseverance is needed because you have to do the same thing over and over.

Olivia: Whether it was painting, cooking, collaging, making pottery, or even taking a woodworking class at summer camp, I was always pursuing my creative interests. I fell in love with art history in high school. My classes introduced me to historic traditions in color and craft, giving me my first real understanding of the legacy craft can have on a culture. My first time in India was part of a gap semester program through the University of Georgia.

He did indeed become a garden designer and a cook extraordinaire, as well as a writer (he’s authored numerous books on both subjects), but an assignment for a French garden magazine truly confirmed his calling. “At that time, chefs were starting to incorporate foraged plant materials, heirloom vegetable varietals, and edible flowers into the dishes they were creating in their restaurants,” Pascal says.

If the architecture provides the structure, the interiors bring the narrative to life. The nearly three-year project coincided with the design of another home owned by the couple in Delray Beach, Florida, turning sourcing trips into ongoing dialogue. From Washington, D.C., to Palm Beach and back to Charlottesville, pieces were gathered with intention and spontaneity alike, although not every moment was seam- less.
A Bayfront Home On Alabama’s Eastern Shore
In Fairhope, Alabama, genteel architecture with Southern touches is sandy landscape. Originally developed as a haven for Mobile residents to escape the city and the heat, Fairhope and the adjoining enclave of Point Clear were established in the early 1800s. Accessible only by ferry at the time, cottages stretched along the brackish shores of Mobile Bay, connected by sidewalks and boardwalks. The traditional bayfront homes featured deep porches for welcoming guests and capturing the breezes.

When entertaining, Ali favors casual alfresco get-togethers with an eclectic mix of barefoot guests accompanied by their four-legged friends. She is a firm believer that nothing is too fragile or fancy to enjoy outdoors, so she pulls out all the stops and all the goodies when hosting. She’s even been known to haul the antique Belgian table, Spanish rattan chairs, and vintage leather arm- chairs out of the dining room and onto the lawn.

While no massive overhauls were required, CeCe did orchestrate a series of refinements. It’s an unofficial edict of hers that “when you buy and renovate an old house, you can’t be scared to make changes and allow the things you love about the house to sing even more.” In the kitchen, for example, she swapped out light fixtures, introduced Portuguese tile to the backsplash, and added a walnut counter to the island so it would read as furniture.
