Do monkeys also get weirded out by the uncanny valley? Answer: Yes. It turns out that human beings aren't the only primates who find the uncanny valley unnerving. Monkeys also don't like it when a simulation of themselves is both too realistic and too fake at the same time. Using modern computer-generated imagery, a research team from the University Clinic Tübingen in Germany and KU Leuven in Belgium created MacAction, a very realistic avatar of a macaque monkey.
Cleveland to Keep Flock Safety Cameras After Vote
(TNS) — Cleveland’s Flock cameras survived a passionate City Council debate Wednesday, with members approving a new contract for the controversial license plate reader system in a 9-6 decision. The six-month extension gives City Hall until late December to either find a new vendor or keep Flock Safety and fulfill Mayor Justin Bibb’s desire to keep the license plate readers that he’s praised as a public safety tool.
North Carolina Concludes Statewide License Plate Camera Test
(TNS) — After a lengthy statewide pilot program, automatic license plate readers are here to stay in North Carolina. The newly passed state budget allows the North Carolina Department of Transportation to enter into agreements with the State Bureau of Investigation to, on state-owned land, place and use automatic license plate readers. The readers take photos of plates and translate the image to text to then compare with databases.
Federal Bill Aims to Help Fix NASA’s Infrastructure
(TNS) — NASA’s infrastructure problems including $1 billion needed to revamp Kennedy Space Center could get an assist with a bill now introduced in both houses of Congress. Rep. Mike Haridopolos, who represents the Space Coast and is the chair of the US House Space and Aeronautics Subcommittee, is leading the lower chamber’s charge filing the Space Ready 2.0 Act on Monday. A version in the US Senate was previously filed by Florida Sen. Ashley Moody.

The two knew the listing was digitally staged, meaning all the furniture they saw in photos online would not be in the actual home. What they didn’t expect was that the digitally added furniture would never even fit in the house.

1st Orange County, Fla. Orange County, Fla., moves to first place in this year’s category, and despite a staff shortage, the county is pushing technology forward. To help reduce deaths from opioid overdoses, the Information Systems and Services Division (ISS) set up the technology that supported a program to treat addiction among jail prisoners. That included data exchanges, workflows and other tools that helped produce a 25 percent reduction in countywide overdose deaths.

1st Marin County, Calif. Marin County earned a first-place spot in this year’s survey for its thoughtful and innovative applications of technology. The county is no stranger to doing hard and innovative things without breaking the bank. Marin’s Digital Accelerator initiative is a perfect example of this sort of ingenuity. The grassroots effort was launched to remove unnecessary bureaucracy and improve services delivered through the Community Development Agency.
