Cure for Paranoia 2026 Tiny Desk Contest Winners. Image: NPR NPR’s 2026 Tiny Desk Contest winner, Cure For Paranoia, will perform this Thursday, July 9, at Greenpoint’s Warsaw (261 Driggs Ave.). The Dallas-based hip-hop collective is the 12th winner of the annual Tiny Desk Contest, a nationwide search that spotlights unsigned artists and helps launch emerging careers. Cure For Paranoia is led by Cameron McCloud.

Williamsburg is now home to two new Cuban kitchens run by Amanda Wright. Brazilian chicken coxinha at Amélie. Photo: Amélie A new coffeeshop called Amélie Café recently opened at 860 Manhattan Avenue, the former home of Upright Coffee, which closed its doors in June 2025. Upright Coffee was originally founded by Michael Medovoy, a co-owner of Sunshine Laundromat and Pinball which shares the same Manhattan Avenue address. Upright’s replacement, Amélie, is located just two doors down from Paris Baguette, a South Korean chain of coffee shops and bakeries.

Good afternoon, Greenpointers Hope everyone is staying cool as this heat wave threatens the big July 4th holiday this weekend (arguably already threatened by this country’s continued democratic backsliding, but we digress!) Regardless of the state of things, it’s neighbors helping neighbors that truly makes this country great. And there have been plenty of examples of that this week.

A fire in Greenpoint injured at least 10 firefighters yesterday evening. The three-alarm fire broke out at 485 Scott Avenue, at a local waste management site next to the Kosciuszko Bridge. “FDNY officials say 63 units and 192 fire and EMS personnel responded to the scene, where they encountered heavy fire and smoke inside,” ABC 7 reports. The city’s current heat wave further complicated things, an FDNY chief told the outlet.

Undoubtedly, the Fourth of July looks and feels a bit different this year (and we’re not just referring to unbridled AI usage and the current heatwave), particularly compared to 1963.

After much speculation, the building site at 148-150 Green Street has officially been sold for condos, Crain’s New York Business reports. The site previously housed the contemporary art gallery Faurschou and the Nordic-inspired restaurant Ilis, two businesses that operated out of the one-story building in Greenpoint. Faurschou unceremoniously closed last year amid rumors of financial issues (that we worked to substantiate but never received a response).

Other than calling them “live-fa-ev-uhs”, that whole Hylotella-ooh-gots-whatever thing had way too many consonants for this neighborhood. They were planted in the late 1970s in her “airy-way”—that’s Greenpoint for areaway—by Pete, the old Italian guy from down the block.
