Order a matcha latte in Portland, and chances are you can trace its history 5,000 miles away to a green tea farm in Japan. Though the drink has roots as far back as seventh-century China, matcha today is largely considered a Japanese creation. The United States is now one of the country’s most ravenous customers — importing more than 2,000 tons of green tea powder from Japan every year.

Fogo de Chão, the Brazilian steakhouse chain that arrived in downtown Portland in 2014 “like a Maserati parked near a row of Subarus,” will open its first suburban Portland restaurant next week.

Santa Clones 2025 Portland is one of the best cities to celebrate Christmas. It may not be a white Christmas in Portland, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be a festive one. This week, personal finance website WalletHub shared its 2025 Best Places for Christmas Celebrations list — based on both traditions and affordability — and Portland snagged a top spot. The survey drew from metrics related to observance, fun, generosity, shopping and cost.

Loyal Legion The popular Portland bar opened its first location more than a decade ago. Loyal Legion’s mission statement is simple. The beer bar’s “sole purpose is to celebrate the Oregon Craft Brewing tradition,” its website helpfully explains. To that effect, the bar opened in 2014 pouring nearly 100 taps of beer, cider and wine, all from Oregon. Soon, Loyal Legion will apply that single-minded pursuit to a state that has so far been kept off of those taps: Washington.
