In Jeffrey Gibson’s world, punching bags are beaded, mannequins don jingle dresses, and slogans shimmer in sequins. Working across painting, sculpture, and video installation, the Choctaw-Cherokee artist enlists a variety of forms, colors, and textures to comment on the many injustices baked into American history. In 2024, he became the first Indigenous artist to present a solo exhibition at the Venice Biennale’s U.S. Pavilion.
