(NEWS 15) — A Lafayette man died after a truck left the roadway and struck him on a sidewalk along Evangeline Thruway before hitting several utility poles, according to the Lafayette Police Department. The victim was identified as Wilbert Davis, 66, of Lafayette. Authorities reported officers were called to SE Evangeline Thruway near Jefferson Boulevard on Monday, Aug. 24, just after 12:15 a.m., in reference to a person hit by a vehicle.

Volunteer firefighter dies in crash while responding to emergency call; name released
KAPLAN, La. (NEWS 15) — A firefighter with the Meaux-Nunez Volunteer Fire Department in Vermilion Parish died after the SUV he was driving to an emergency call left the roadway and crashed into a ditch, according to Louisiana State Police. Troopers reported Robert Hughes, 49, of Kaplan, was killed in the single-vehicle wreck. They said it happened on LA 14 near West Pirates Lane in Kaplan on Friday, Aug.
2 dead, 3 others injured in shooting outside Eunice daiquiri shop
EUNICE, La. (NEWS 15) — Two people are dead and three others are injured after an overnight shooting outside a Eunice daiquiri shop, according to the Eunice Police Department. The names of the victims have not been released. Police Chief Kyle LeBouef reported officers responded to a shooting at Chip's Daiquiris on West Laurel Avenue on Saturday, Aug. 22, just before 12:15 a.m. He said the shooting happened in the parking lot. He added five people were shot and two of them have died.
Acadiana veterans group preps for 7th annual care package drive
DUSON, La. (NEWS 15) — An Acadiana veterans group is preparing for its seventh annual Veterans Day parade and care package giveaway, with donation collection set to begin next month. Acadiana Area for Veterans in Duson will start collecting care package donations at locations around the region on Friday, Sept. 4. Items needed include hygiene products and non-perishable food. The care packages will be handed out during the group's Veterans Day parade.
