KUVO (89.3 FM) is an American radio station broadcasting mainly jazz music in a public radio format. Licensed to Denver, Colorado, KUVO began operations on August 29, 1985. The station's local programming consists primarily of jazz, blues, and latin jazz music, but it also includes programs devoted to other musical genres such as acid jazz, funk, gospel, rhythm and blues, and salsa. The station also carries selected NPR and other syndicated programs such as: Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz; Riverwalk Jazz, hosted by Jim Cullum; Jazz from Lincoln Center, hosted by Wynton Marsalis; and Dee Dee Bridgewater's Jazz Set. The station has its own performance studio and will on occasion broadcast live performances and interviews by local and national recording artists. Newport Jazz Fest 2025 - Lakecia Benjamin in Conversation with Ayana Contreras
For the March 2023 cover of DownBeat Magazine I contributed the cover story, entitled “Finding Phoenix: Lakecia Benjamin Enters Her Next Phase”. In 2021, she had a major car accident that resulted in a broken jaw, collarbone and scapula, among other injuries. The road back had been difficult, but the critically-acclaimed resulting album, Phoenix (2023), celebrated her perseverance, as well as the folks who had poured into her.

The Hot Wing King, set in Memphis, attracts all kinds, including Cordell and his friends, who all have opinions on how to make his recipe a winner. It’s a “dramedy,” served up in a sauce that is rich with opinions, confrontation, family dynamics, and real wings cooked on stage. Writer Katori Hall (who also wrote “Tina – The Tina Turner Musical”) won a Pulitzer for a play in 2021.

The recent performance of BTTRFLY QUINTET at KUVO’s Masterpiece Studio has been remixed and is now on KUVO’s YouTube and Twitch channels. BTTRFLY QUINTET is the newly formed project of; Eric “Benny” Bloom (Lettuce), Dominic Lalli (Big Gigantic), Adam Deitch (Lettuce), Borahm Lee (Break Science/Parrisian Live Band), and Hunter Roberts (Break Science Live). This group of musicians that reside in Denver is highly regarded across America and the world.
Eats & Beats: Dozens
Call it “breakfast mastercraft.” Dozens has arguably the most interesting and readable menu in the breakfast game, and the plates live up to the hype. The “regulars” from City Hall and Police headquarters are back, and John England (call him “Johnny Scrambles”) says their address at 14th Street and Tremont Place is a solid downtown spot for breakfast and lunch. The downtown landmark Dozens is now fully recovered from a devastating 2022 kitchen fire at the old location at 13th and Cherokee.

Puerto Rico is known for its amazing Christmas celebrations that begin in mid-December’s Advent season and continue to January 14th with las Octavitas, a centuries-old post-12 Days of Christmas tradition very few places still celebrate.
Live & Local: Too Hot to Handel
One of the mainstays of the holidays in Denver is the Colorado Symphony and Chorus performance of “Too Hot to Handel,” which is in performance this Saturday night, December 21, and Sunday afternoon, December 22. Chorus director Mary Louise Burke has been with the production since it started in the 1990s. She visited The Morning Set to share some stories about how the gospel, soul and jazz reinterpretation of Handel’s work, and the chorus that sings it have evolved.
