Despite hundreds of millions of dollars spent to curb homelessness, the number of people without a home in Long Beach rose for the second year in a row — with a larger spike for people who are “chronically homeless” and typically most difficult to keep in permanent housing, officials announced Monday. It’s a reversal of fortune for a city that two years ago declared it had “turned the tide” on homelessness.

Firefighters extinguished a blaze Monday morning at an unoccupied, “packrat” home in North Long Beach. No one was injured in the fire, which was reported shortly before 9:15 a.m. at a single-story home on 59th Street between Elm and Linden avenues, said Long Beach Fire Department spokesperson Brian Fisk.
