CEDARVILLE, Ohio -- The Michigan Tech Huskies soccer team fell 3-1 to the Northwood Timberwolves Thursday evening in a neutral-site match at Cedarville. The Huskies tied the game in the first half, but surrendered a pair of second-half tallies. “Tonight was obviously not the result we wanted,” Huskies coach Mellisa Kuhar said. “I thought we had the better chances and really created a lot in the final third, but just couldn’t find the back of the net.

The other day a friend of mine was in tears in my living room; her son, who had married, was refusing to baptize the new baby. The person I was talking with was distraught, for she was certain that her new grandchild was never going to be allowed into heaven. HOUGHTON -- There is something special about racing at home. Just ask the Jeffers Jets and Houghton Gremlins cross country teams as they have both taken top spots while running on their home turf in the first two weeks of the 2026 cross country season. While the Jeffers boys opened with a win at their Kilpela Farms meet in late August, they came in second Thursday at the Bill Fezzey Memorial Run at the Tech Trails in Houghton.

A mass exodus of 10 schools in 15 months left the Pac-12 in tatters, dimming the future of a conference that was once the proud home of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Cheryl Miller, Tiger Woods, Jackie Robinson, Lisa Leslie, Jackie Joyner-Kersey and many more.

Dollar Bay falls in five EWEN -- The Dollar Bay-Tamarack City Blue Bolts volleyball team fell on the road at Ewen-Trout Creek Thursday night, 26-28, 25-8, 25-29, 26-28, 23-25, to the Panthers. For Dollar Bay, Lillian Pelland-Rippey led all hitters with 20 kills, followed by Hannah Karanen with 16. Ava Nye led from the service line with 14 service points, including a pair of aces. Kiya Kemppainen ended the night with 44 digs, alongside Ellie Keranen, who racked up 34 digs.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The Michigan Tech Huskies volleyball team opened its weekend at the Mountain Lion Classic with a five-set loss to the tournament host, the Colorado-Colorado Springs Mountain Lions. Trailing 2-0 after the first two sets, the Huskies won sets three and four to force the fifth, before the hosts won 15-10 in the final frame.

HANCOCK -- At Wednesday’s meeting, the Hancock City Council. received an update on the current water and sewer project on Prospect and Elevation streets. City Manager Mary Babcock said the Market Street re-pavment between South Lincoln Drive and Elevation Street will be completed by the end of next week. "That work is being done as we speak," Babcock said.

LANSING - The Michigan Craft Beverage Council (MCBC) announced it will accept proposals for the 2027 research and education grant program until Friday, October 9, 2026, at 3 p.m. (EdT). The MCBC awards individual research grants of up to $40,000.

LANSING -- The Michigan Departments of Agriculture and Rural Development and Natural Resources are reminding consumers to not move firewood long distances this holiday weekend to help prevent the spread of invasive insects and plant diseases. The agencies are also working to expand access to certified invasive-free firewood. Firewood movement is one of the most common pathways for the spread of invasive insects and diseases.

CHASSELL -- Sharon Gail Stipech (Aho), 81, passed away peacefully at her home in Chassell on September 3, 2026. Sharon was born in L'Anse on December 10, 1944, to Edward Aho and Aune Aho (Turpeinen). She grew up on her parents' dairy farm in Baraga with her older sister Sandra and younger brother Dale. She begged her mother to let her go to kindergarten a year early. The girls spoke Finnish at home before attending school. Her family’s farms in Baraga and Pelkie were prominent in her childhood.
