Cook, MN (MinnesotaNow) - Authorities are investigating an electrocution death on a northeastern Minnesota lake. The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office says the deadly incident was reported shortly before 4:50 p.m. Friday on Lake Vermilion. Emergency crews responded to a property on the east end of the lake, about five miles north of Cook, where it was reported that a man was in the water and was being electrocuted by a boat.

Universal’s new Fast & Furious roller coaster might be ... too fun? Apparently, Universal Studios Hollywood’s latest attraction, Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift, is so exciting that it’s drawing noise complaints from the theme park’s neighbors in the Los Angeles area.

There’s a famous quote attributed to the great French filmmaker Jean Renoir. “A director only makes one film in his life,” Renoir said. “Then he breaks it into pieces and makes it again.” This may be an exaggeration, but in the case of Christopher Nolan, there is a fair amount of truth to it as well. Nolan has directed 13 feature films over his career so far, including his latest project, The Odyssey.

It has been an incredibly smoky week in the Northland. In fact, it has been so smoky this week in northern Minnesota due to wildfires burning in the area that at one point, we had the worst air quality in the world. At the time of writing, it doesn't look like the smoke is going anywhere. While it was expected to taper off on Friday (July 17th), it looks like it is expected to linger into the weekend yet again after a brief break in the afternoon. It may even continue into early next week.

Pretty much the entire state of Minnesota has been sweltering under a summer heatwave with oppressive humidity and temperatures in the 90s, but only one place can claim the title of the hottest spot in the entire state. The finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup are set to take place this weekend, and the sea creatures at SEA LIFE at Minnesota's Mall of America have predicted which team will win the whole thing. In case you haven't been following along, the 2026 FIFA World Cup has been taking place right here in North America for the first time in over 30 years.

By far the biggest story in the Northland this week is the intense wildfire smoke we have been experiencing all week long thanks to fires burning in northern Minnesota and beyond. It has been very intense in the Duluth area, with the wildfire smoke causing event cancellations. One of Grandma's most popular races was even cancelled on Thursday (July 16th) due to the hazardous conditions. At one point this week, Duluth had the worst air quality in the entire world.

We all have those shows that got away, canceled by their home network or streaming service before we were ready to say goodbye. Most of these shows get at least a few seasons to try to find an audience of dedicated viewers before their time is up, amassing a small but mighty fanbase willing to post angrily on social media when their fave gets the inevitable axe. Others only stay for a season, accidental miniseries with endless potential we’ll never get to see, alas.

Earlier this week, I had the chance to tour US Steel's Minntac Mine. It was really interesting to see the complex process that it takes to extract iron from our rich deposits. I've driven by mines before, but never actually inside them. I was shocked at how big everything is. It's like everything has been supersized because of the equipment needed to haul this heavy rock. One of the first things I noticed is how the haul road is built like a freeway or an airstrip. It's massive.

The God of War TV series might as well have been cursed by the gods themselves. Production of the show, based on the hit PlayStation video games, has been paused since star Ryan Hurst was injured during an stunt gone wrong on set. Now Deadline reports that because the recovery time for his injury is so long, Amazon is going to recast the role of Kratos and reshoot all of his scenes.
