Robert C. McMahan, 84, formerly of South Burlington, passed away peacefully on July 1, 2026, at The Arbors in Shelburne. Born on Sept. 14, 1941, in Youngstown, Ohio, Bob was the son of the late Robert L. and Lucille M. (McIntosh) McMahan and the younger brother of the late Nancy Dawson and Barbara Wise. A graduate of the University of Youngstown with a bachelor’s in electrical engineering, Bob proudly served as an officer in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Newman K.

Senator appointed to South Burlington School Board seat
Sen. Thomas Chittenden (D, Chittenden District) The South Burlington School Board has appointed the only applicant for a vacant spot on the board: Sen. Thomas Chittenden, D-South Burlington. The board last week appointed him to fill the spot until Town Meeting Day next year. Chittenden, who is also running for re-election to the Senate, told the board he won’t run to finish the remaining year on the term at that time.
Good clean funds at Scout car wash
Scout Troop 611 and Troop 6110 are having a car wash and bottle drive on Saturday, July 18, from 1-3 p.m. at St. John Vianney Church parking lot at 160 Hinesburg Road, South Burlington. A suggested donation of $10 per car is appreciated. All proceeds benefit Troop 611 and 6110 for a new troop trailer and camping equipment. Bread & Puppet explores our upside-down world
The Upside-Down World Circus returns to confront our upside-down situation with stilt dancers, paper mâché beasts and a riotous brass band, performing each Sunday, July 19-Aug. 30, at 3 p.m. on the Bread & Puppet Farm, 753 Heights Road, Glover. A pageant follows around 4:30 p.m., with sideshows before the circus. After each show, Bread & Puppet will serve its sourdough rye bread with aioli, and “Cheap Art” — books, posters, postcards, pamphlets and banners — will be for sale.
Supreme Court Gallery presents ‘Animal, Mineral’
The Vermont Supreme Court Gallery presents “Animal, Mineral” by Heidi Broner, a summer exhibition presented by the Vermont State Curator’s Office. Broner utilizes an “on the fly” photographic process to capture spontaneous compositions which are often used later in her process as foundational blueprints as she crafts her paintings. A Montpelier Art Walk and Artist’s Reception will be held Friday, Aug.
Vermont Psychic Expo returns Aug. 1-2
The fourth annual Vermont Psychic Expo descends on the Champlain Valley Exposition in Essex Junction on Aug. 1 and 2, transforming the Expo North building into a weekend-long haven for readers, seekers, workshops and vendors from across the region. Vermont Gas hires state agency head as new CEO
Lindsay Kurrle will become Vermont Gas’s next president and CEO, succeeding Neale Lunderville. Kurrle was selected by the South Burlington company’s board of directors following a national search. According to a press release, Kurrle brings more than two decades of executive leadership across energy, economic development and financial oversight.
Red Cross holds blood drives amid shortage
The American Red Cross is declaring an emergency blood shortage after the blood supply fell nearly 25% in June. The shortage is especially serious for platelets and types O positive and B negative blood, according to a press release this week. Currently, Red Cross distributions to hospitals are nearly 3,500 units higher per week than expected at a time when hospitals often see higher demand for blood products during the height of trauma season, the press release stated.

The City of South Burlington cut the ribbon on the new City Center board walk last week, which connects Barrett, Iby, Market and Garden streets. Residents will notice a new park sign on Market Street, which now serves as the main entrance to City Center Park. City officisls were joined by some residents along to celebrate the milestone at last week’s ribbon cutting ceremony.
