Posted Tuesday, July 7, 2026 10:32 am John Ventrice, a Missouri man who was visiting his family in Henry County, took the 250th birthday of the United States seriously, donning red, white and blue flag overalls during the national anthem at the Kenny Ray Legacy Freedom Fest on the Fourth of July in Puryear. The event honored Puryear mayor Kenny Ray Gallimore, who is having health issues. It featured a car show, bike show, trade day, live music and fireworks. Find us on Facebook

Posted Tuesday, July 7, 2026 2:34 pm A well-decorated group of children mark the 250th birthday of the United States while riding in a float on the Fourth of July during the Cottage Grove Freedom Festival. The traditional holiday event raises money for the city’s volunteer fire department. This float carried a theme of “Firequacker,” a popular character in the video game “DuckTales 2.” Find us on Facebook

The City of Paris is applying for a $100,000 tourism grant to be used for McNeill Park, according to discussion at Monday’s meeting of the Paris Parks and Recreation Board. The grant would go toward beautification efforts at McNeill, which has the second most annual visits of any park in Paris, behind Eiffel Tower Park. The main focus if the grant is approved would be on creating a new sign, and working on rusted parts of fencing.

Two citizens who held prominent roles in Paris and Henry County for decades recently died. Tommy Townsend, a prominent optometrist and civic leader in Henry County for 50 years, died July 2 at age 75. And, Judy Jackson McClanahan, 81, the former Henry County trustee, died on July 1 in Mayfield. Dr. Townsend’s funeral service was Monday at East Wood Church of Christ, with burial in Maplewood Cemetery.
