The Minnesota State Fair is known as the state’s “Great Get Together,” and, for the first time, it is getting together some of the state’s greatest short film makers. Nathaniel Nelson, a Rochester-based film director, was one of 26 directors chosen to screen a film at the inaugural Films at the Fair event hosted and curated by Square Lake Film & Music.

MAZEPPA, Minn. — On a warm, late summer evening, Trapper the dog was hard at work at a boat launch on Lake Zumbro. The two-year-old yellow labrador retriever was sniffing each watercraft before it was launched into the water, hunting for little zebra mussels. He stuck his snout under Mike Hennessey’s fishing boat — and Trapper found nothing. That’s good news.

Chatfield native Sam Backer has had some impressive performances as a running back at Minnesota State University, Mankato. None — so far — better than what he did on Saturday. The Mavericks’ junior ball carrier broke free on the first play from scrimmage at the University of Mary (Bismarck, N.D.) for an 80-yard touchdown.

Have you had your fill of Pumpkin Spice lattes yet? Good, then it's time to move on to that other fall beverage — apple cider. It's the season for it, served plain or warmed up on a chilly fall day. Apple drinks are always a little confusing — you need to figure out which is what. Apple cider is just that — unfiltered, unfermented, unsweetened juice made from pressing apples. Add yeast or leave on the counter for a while and it ferments into boozy hard cider.

He didn’t want to shortchange them. The American Red Cross could turn away dozens of people from area blood drives who spent time in Europe as a safeguard against the possible transmission of mad cow disease through human blood.

FARGO — When Kerry Berg learned she would need a double mastectomy to treat aggressive breast cancer, she applied for Minnesota Paid Leave to help bridge the gap as she recovered. Berg, who lives in Fargo but worked in Minnesota, was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma in March. With her surgery scheduled in mid-May, she applied for four weeks of continuous paid leave through the state-run program on May 6.

After a rainy day yesterday, we will start to dry out again this afternoon with plenty of sunshine and winds that stay light. Highs by the afternoon top out in the upper 70s across Southern Minnesota, and winds stay around 5 to 15 miles per hour out of the west. Tonight will see the skies remain clear, and that will allow lows to fall into the low 50s as humidity will stay low through today and tomorrow. Tomorrow will be very similar to today, with winds staying light, and highs approaching 80°.

ROCHESTER — Lourdes and Goodhue competed on Tuesday in a close Hiawatha Valley League matchup, with the Wildcats coming out on top 25-19, 20-25, 25-16, 25-21. Ashlee Barton led the way for Goodhue with 16 kills. Grace Ludwig 14 kills and Ruby Schafer had 21 digs for the Wildcats. Goodhue's Hazel Volkmann had a match-high 35 assists. Lauren Wackel notched 10 kills for Lourdes. Lilly Klapperich had 16 digs and Ella Dahl put up 19 assists in the loss. Goodhue improves to 2-1. Lourdes drops to 3-4.

ROCHESTER — With topics ranging from education standards to data center regulations, state Rep. Steve Jacob, R-Altura, and DFL candidate Jason Lohmann of Zumbrota answered questions during a Rochester League of Women Voters candidate forum Tuesday, Sept. 8, at Rochester Public Library. The candidates are running for the Senate District 20 seat being vacated by Sen. Steve Drazkowski who declined to run for another term.
