California officers catch commercial fishers operating in conservation area
California Department of Fish and Wildlife officers were able to catch a pair of commercial fishers harvesting from a conservation area, following multiple days of surveillance. According to CDFW, wildlife officers noticed a pattern of incursions taking place in Swamis State Marine Conservation Area (SMCA), a protected area where offshore fishing by vessel is prohibited.

A study conducted by researchers at the University of British Columbia has found that industrial-scale illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing accounts for as much as 15 percent of global marine wild capture and is estimated to be worth between USD 6.2 billion and USD 12.2 billion (EUR 5.4 billion and EUR 10.5 billion).
Dutch feed manufacturer invests in USD 4 million Kenyan plant
Eemnes, Netherlands-based feed manufacturer Maxim Agri Holding has signed an agreement with the Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) to become an investor in a USD 3.95 million (EUR 3.42 million) fish feed plant, located 120 kilometers northwest of Nairobi. Maxim Agri has become the fifth investor in the facility, which once fully operational will have the capacity to produce 8 metric tons (MT) of feed an hour.

US court hears arguments against turtle excluder devices in inshore Louisiana waters
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit is considering a challenge to a 2019 NOAA Fisheries rule forcing Louisiana inshore shrimpers to install turtle excluder devices (TEDs). A TED is a grid of metal bars placed in a trawl net that block larger animals – like turtles – while allowing smaller animals – like shrimp – to pass through. Louisiana shrimpers claim the requirement on inshore vessels is excessive, making their work more difficult and expensive despite little risk to turtles.
Aker QRILL announces end of Antarctic krill fishing for the season after harvest limit hit
Aker QRILL announced it is ceasing its krill fishing in the Antarctic for the season as the fishery has hit its precautionary harvest limit for the second time in history. NGOs rose the alarm earlier in the week that the krill fishery in the Antarctic, which is managed by the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR), was approaching the precautionary catch limit of 620,000 metric tons (MT).

A U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC) review has determined certain Vietnamese companies dumped certain frozen fish fillets in the U.S. between 1 August 2023 and 31 July 2024. The DOC review found that Dien Dong Seafood and NTSF Seafoods Joint Stock Company made sales of certain frozen fish fillets in the U.S. at less than normal value during the review period.
