This year’s heat and drought might require modification of our Labor Day yard and garden tasks, which is a benchmark holiday for many lawn and perennial garden projects. Following is a checklist of yard and garden to-dos, traditionally recommended for around Labor Day.

Wascott: Four Seasons Recreational Club hosts a picnic and inflatables from noon to 4 p.m. at the Wascott park, 16380 S. Ball Park Road. Amnicon: A program about turkey huntingis at 3 p.m. at Amnicon Falls State Park, in the pavilion. Learn how to call, how to place decoys, and other tips. Free but state park parking pass required. Superior: The Great Northern Classic Rodeo is at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 5 and 2 p.m. Sept. 6 at the Head of the Lakes Fairgrounds.
Anderson is the ultimate utility player for Spartan football
SUPERIOR — Thomas Anderson doesn’t come off the field too often, and he wouldn’t want it any other way. He’s a versatile junior who has his fingerprints all over Superior’s program. Every Friday evening, he sees extensive action at running back, linebacker and long snapper, and he does it all while being part of the kick return unit, too. “My main position is linebacker, but I still believe that I’m a good running back,” he said.
Cloudy with rain chances over the holiday weekend

Prep report: Northwestern runs St. Croix Falls ragged
Northwestern pounded out 346 rushing yards and four touchdowns and shut down a significant Heart O’North Conference rival on its home field by beating St. Croix Falls 32-14 on Friday night in St. Croix Falls. Tysen Teal ran for 170 yards on 25 carries and scored once, Cam Teal ran for 104 yards on seven attempts with a touchdown, while Mason Chell hit the end zone twice and ran for 67 yards on 18 carries.

Wallace J. “Wally” Barry (age 77) passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love, hard work, friendship, and a lifetime of memories that will be cherished by all who knew him. Wally was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, a proud veteran, and a true friend. He was the kind of man who believed in showing up, working hard, helping others, and making the most of the life he had been given.
Family challenges self-defense in 2009 shooting death, citing inconsistencies
MOORHEAD — All his adolescent life, Jeremy LaFromboise shared a bedroom with his older brother, Joel. They knew everything about each other, loved the guitar, rap and rock ‘n' roll. Joel, at 17 years old and nearly 6 feet 3 inches tall, was Jeremy’s protector in 2009, keeping him safe when he was bullied at Moorhead High School. He showed him how to play basketball and skip stones across Mille Lacs Lake.
