The Frame · I spent last summer scouring the South for the products of prison labor in a strange scavenger hunt across small-town America. A freshman’s dorm mattress at Mississippi State University. A Georgia Medicaid patient’s eyeglasses. The goalpost padding at Bauxite High School in Arkansas. The burn ban flag at the Boerne Fire Department in Texas Hill Country. All of them were made by people incarcerated in American prisons.

Others said actions speak louder than words, and they want the governor to commute their death sentences to life without the possibility of parole. But all agreed with the governor on one thing: Ohio’s death penalty law is broken.

During its first year, deportations increased fivefold, according to the Deportation Data Project. From the president’s inauguration on Jan. 20, 2025, to mid-March, more than 6,200 children have been in detention, including babies. ICE is expanding the places where it arrests people — courts during routine check-ins, airports, churches.

At 7 years old, JeanCarlos Fiallos Manzanares crossed the U.S.-Mexico border illegally, hiding in the trunk of a taxi with his older sister. For more than a decade, he lived in the shadows in the United States. Salvation came, or appeared to, in his 20s, when President Barack Obama offered young immigrants like him protection from deportation. But last year, agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement pulled him over near his mother’s house in Miami.

By Lexie Handlang Betrayed. Hurt. Distraught. Suicidal. These are just some of the emotions I felt after someone who I thought was a friend raped me. I also felt disbelief that what happened actually took place. But it did happen, in 2014, six months after I got to prison. I said no, but it didn’t matter. He was determined to inflict permanent pain on me. I was brand new to life in a maximum security correctional facility and therefore didn’t know that people could be so cold and callous.
