Day Hiker – Norden Train Tunnels at Donner

Thanks to the obsession of Theodore Judah to route trains through and over the Sierra Nevada Mountains, we get to enjoy the Norden tunnels. Maybe that’s a stretch—but not really. Judah did find a way, and Track #1 was in use for 125 years before being decommissioned in 1993. The tunnels and snow sheds were designed to keep the tracks somewhat clear of rocks and snow. Today, tunnels #6, #7, and #8 are a tourist attraction, a canvas for street artists, and a unique one-mile trail for hikers.

Day Hiker – Mount Judah Loop Trail

The Mount Judah Loop Trail is why I am a day hiker. This 5-mile moderate hike offers everything I love about hiking: magnificent views, a profusion of wildflowers and even snow in August. The trail begins at 7,050 feet and climbs 1,150 feet. From the top of the ridge, you'll enjoy sweeping views of Donner Lake stretching into Truckee, as well as Mount Lincoln, Anderson Ridge, Anderson Peak, Tinker Knob and beyond.

Day Hiker – Sagehen Trail

The open meadow of the Sagehen Trail is just one reason to make the drive east on Interstate 80 to Truckee. Wildflowers in season are another. And the view of Stampede Reservoir spread out at your feet is yet another. This easy 2.5-mile one-way stroll makes it accessible to many hikers. Located on the east side and home to numerous poplar trees, it’s also a beautiful autumn hiking destination.
