GENEVA, Ala. (WTVY/Gray News) - An Alabama grandfather was killed when a large tree limb fell on him as he walked through his yard with his grandson, officials say. Melvin T. Dixon, 68, was pronounced dead after an oak limb fell on him around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. The grandfather had been walking through his yard with his young grandson in the Fadette community, Geneva County Coroner Donny Adkinson said. The coroner said Dixon was pinned beneath the tree limb after it fell.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - Former Florida quarterback Will Grier is calling it a career. The 31-year-old announced his retirement from the NFL. Many Gator fans remember Grier’s hot start in 2015, when he helped Florida open 6-0, including a win over then-No. 3 Ole Miss at The Swamp. Grier was later suspended for performance-enhancing drugs and did not play another game for Florida. He transferred to West Virginia and was drafted by the Carolina Panthers in the third round.

Judge sides with Gilchrist County man who invoked Stand Your Ground after shooting neighbor’s dog
BELL, Fla. (WCJB) - A judge has sided with an 85-year-old man who invoked Florida’s Stand Your Ground law after shooting his neighbor’s dog. Attorneys for Larry Boiven said he was granted immunity after being accused of aggravated animal cruelty. Boiven said the dog approached him while growling last October, and he was afraid it would attack him. He told TV20 last month that for years he has had problems with his neighbor’s dogs escaping. DUNNELLON, Fla. (WCJB) - Dunnellon city council members voted Wednesday to fire Community Development Manager William Ary, 33, following his arrest last week on suspicion of stealing from taxpayers. Marion County Sheriff’s deputies say Ary charged nearly $15,000 to a city credit card to send his youth group to a Christian summer camp. The council voted to terminate his employment as he faces criminal charges.
