Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
As a general assignment reporter for The Standard, Missouri State University's student newspaper.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes, very slowly.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
If we don't already have a rapport, I prefer a short pitch that details how it applies to the end user audience I write for.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
The usual suspects: email, Microsoft Word, and Twitter.
What's your favorite social network?
Twitter for the shade. Instagram for the escape.
Who do you wish followed you?
Tom Hanks because everyone loves America's Dad.
Why did you become a journalist?
I love meeting new people and having an excuse to ask them questions.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
No, unfortunately my Missouri high school did not have a newspaper. That just motivated me to be highly involved in my college paper.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Mid-morning, roughly 10 a.m. to noon.
What's your favorite drink?
Coffee at work, a Kolsch or Saison for happy hour.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
On a motorcycle trip with friends.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
It's a tie between WIRED and The Washington Post, my local paper.
