What an incredible year for Black creativity, insight, and resistance. Yes! There’s a lot of Christianity in Vodou, in Hoodoo. Hollywood really struggles with the complexity of that. And what we’re seeing in Sinners isn’t removed from what the characters’ enslaved ancestors might have done, but it’s also not removed from Christianity.

Los Angeles’ Museum of Contemporary Art and the Brick opened MONUMENTS last week, an exhibit that reflects on the removal and recontextualization of decommissioned monuments. Two of the installations—Kara Walker’s “Unmanned Drone,” the exhibit’s centerpiece; and a two-ton pile of bronze ingots stamped with “Swords into Plowshares”–repurpose Confederate statues that once stood in Charlottesville, VA.
