1 Introduction Chronic kidney disease is a progressive disorder impacting over 10% of the global population, affecting more than 800 million people worldwide [1]. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is defined as either structural or functional kidney damage, or a sustained reduction in glomerular filtration rate (GFR) below 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 for a duration of at least 3 months, irrespective of the underlying cause [2].
